I always thought that the business idea won’t last long; but with the huge exposures by media and bloggers… seems that these eateries are becoming a bizarre food icon from Taiwan, something like fugu in Japan and live octopus in Korea.
Below are pictures from Modern Toilet, a food chain that operates 12 toilet themed restaurants in Taiwan; these pics are from its outlet in Shilin, Taipei…

I would certainly visit one of these restaurants if I visit Taiwan; not sure if I could consume all the food though… the sh!t ice cream seems a bit too much lol.

I was in Taiwan in 98-99 and thank GOODNESS I hit it before the 2004 debut of these toilet restaurants, because I simply would not have been able to deal with them. Just looking at the pictures makes me woozy. I have regular anxiety dreams about being trapped in dirty toilet stalls and this would just feed into my neurosis. . .
On a purely intellectual level, though, kudos to whoever came up with the idea.

I just wouldn’t eat there… Seriously… It would ruin my appetite… That food could be super gourmet… I’d still not be able to savor it…
I’m not sure if i should admire or despise the more “courageous” people actually going there – is it a test of strength, or are you some sick pervs?
I ate at one of these in Hong Kong. The irony is that it really was a shitty meal…dry, unappetizing pasta, and half of the menu was sold out.
