16 Chinese policemen have been killed in an attack on a border post in northwestern China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region this morning (Aug 4).

Two attackers drove a tip lorry to hit a team of policemen who were jogging through the street in a morning exercise at about 8:00am before throwing home-made explosive to the barracks and hacking other policemen with knifes.

14 policemen were killed on the spot and two others died on the way to hospital; 16 others are injured. [Xinhuanet]

The two attackers had been arrested; and the authorities are suspecting this as a terrorist attack with the East Turkistan Islamic Movement in mind.

The Chinese press seems to be playing down the issue as the Beijing Olympics is looming near… but the incident is certainly going to raise further fear on the safety and security during the Olympic Games.

This sounds like might be the muslim group that made threats last week of future attacks in China.

“The East Turkestan Islamic Movement, an underground separatist organization in the Xinjiang region of western China, which advocates independence for the area’s Muslim Uighur inhabitants. China often warns of the danger posed by the group.”

Sounds like they’re following through on their threats.

Interesting, that same group yesterday released a video warning all muslims to stay off buses and trains etc indicating that those things will be targeted. Hope they don’t follow through on that. Spain, London know all about train and subway bombings in the last couple years.

It was also noted in the news that the group, The East Turkestan Islamic Movement is believed to be based in Pakistan and received training by Al Qiada

I just hope that innocent people would not be hurt… not just for Olympics, but in any other occasions around the world. Attacking civilians help nothing… they won’t achieve any cause, and even if they manage to get international attention… it’s all bad attention.
