Gay model Kim Ji-hoo (pic) became the latest Korean entertainer to commit suicide.
Choi was found dead on October 6; he was the second entertainer who committed suicide following the death of actress Choi Jin-shil last week. Earlier on October 3, transsexual entertainer Jang Chae-won committed suicide ala Choi Jin-shil’s method.
Initial police investigations suggested that Kim committed suicide because of career block and online harassment of his sexual preference, while Jang chose the path because of a broken relationship.
I’ve read somewhere that there was at least another two copycat suicide since Choi’s death… and the Korean authorities are fearing that the suicide chain would create a domino effect in the Korean society, which is already fragile with their high suicide rate.
Stop blaming the internet
The Korean government is drafting a law against malicious rumours and slandering via the internet, as the online harassment is seen as one of the major causes of entertainers’ suicide.
I doubt the law could work though; and the effect would be minimal even if it works, because the problem is not the internet itself… it’s a cultural and society problem.
Internet is just a medium that pulled the final trigger; there are still other mediums for spreading rumours and slanders… what the Koreans need are to find the root cause and solve the problems once and for all.

Reminds me of an incident where a teenaged girl commited suicide because someone was posting ugly comments and rumors about her on a myspace page. It turned out to be another girl’s mother who was jealous of her for some reason concerning her own daughter.
YeinJee’s right, it’s a cultural issue. Internet is just another tool that today’s bullies, theives and other evil people have to use to hurt other people.
If Korea ever figures out how to change it all then they should let the U.S. in on their secret. Society’s craziness is getting to be an epidemic in all the developed areas of the world.
It’s a shame people can’t disipline themselves to not abuse the tools and ‘toys’ that are available in the world and be meanspirited, bullies, dishonest and evil. But I guess that’s just how alot of people are.
I’m not saying people have to be some kind of friendly outgoing, funny clown all the time trying to make everybody like you and laugh. those kinds are usually fake anyway…
I’m saying people need to start being respectful and kind by not bullying others and try just leaving other people alone for a change. That shouldn’t be so hard for people to do.
But as always, you can’t control other people’s behavior. the world turns. You just gotta deal with it best you can. And watch out for the wolves in sheeps clothing….cause there’s alot of ‘em out there. :/

hmmm..with all these stuff that’s been going in korea, i came to think that it’s still much better to live in my country…at least even if we are a third world country and a lot of people (not all) here are poor, or jobless ( esp. now on the global crisis…we still have lower rates of committing suicide…At least i can say, we still have a big HOPE on our hearts that this could all stop…too sad for them

Surprise! What happen the the handlers, the managers, don’t they have eyes? That is your client, your money maker reach out and help. The cast sysytem in Korean is killing off their young youth and they do not give a “rats ass” perfection is not for everyone, we all have flaws but their envious nature propell parents to bush their children mercifully without thinking about the child and what their strong hold is doing to their children, that is GREED on you the parents pay attention to your children, so what they are not as accomplish as Joe Blow, they are better at other things help them to develop the other skills they are good at. It not a trend parent are pushing their children to the brink of madness.
Another issue is being gay a dirty word? People this is the 21st century no one is perfect love your children regardless, stop threatening them that they will kill themselves, if that what you feel like do it, get out of your childrens life.
Call out to the younger generation, change your way of thinking, change the perception that you have to be perfect. Your parents lived their lives, you are the captain of your ship not your parents who knows nothing.
