Another day to go before the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympics. Some random news and information about Olympics and happenings in Beijing…

The game has started

The women’s soccer tournament of the Beijing Olympics kicked off at 17:00 Beijing time on Wednesday, two days before the opening ceremony. It’s common for soccer (and some other team sports) to start the games earlier.

Official Youtube channel

International Olympic Committee (IOC) has set up an official Youtube channel for the Beijing games, sharing a wide selection of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games clips.

Videos embedding is disabled, so I can’t share any of their videos here.

Alternatively, try the video channel of Beijing Olympics official website.

A six-minute promotional movie for the Beijing Olympics (I think it’s unofficial), featuring some Chinese cultural stuff and glory moments of the past…

The New York Times created an interactive map that shows the medal count of each country for all of the modern games since 1896. [via Neatorama]

Some other random news concerning olympics. North and South Korea announced they will not march together into the games as they had done the last two olympics. The political leaders on both sides said tensions are worse this year between the two and reunification plans have suffered setbacks. Also, the shooting of the SK tourist a couple weeks ago by the NK soldier did not help matters.

The last two olympics the two countries had marched together under one banner that only said “Korea”.

kyon… yupe, the music is a bit dull, and kinda long as bb said. Actually there is a shorter version (around 1:30min), but I thought of sharing the complete one.

cole… too bad about the Koreans. For the past decade it seems like their relationship is improving, but it takes some unexpected twist.

bb… well, I hope the Chinese come on top too; but I kinda have a feeling that some of them will tumble under home pressure. Besides, lots of their athletes’ forms are not peaking at the moment… the prospect doesn’t seem good actually.

i like the medal map. i didn’t realized that europeans are the real power house. normally we talk about the countries like usa, china and russia, but when it is combined in regions, the europeans ruled even without russia or ussr.

    @ #5 kyon:
European is not a country like USA, China, or Russia–saying “European,” means the people of Europe. Europe is a continent, not a counrty, therefore not a “power house.”
