The floating village is a cultural heritage and tourist attraction in Halong Bay, Vietnam. People have been living in these houses for hundred of years with fishing as the main income activity. Some photos below, taken during my trip in July 2008…

Most of the junks and cruises would pass by at least one of these floating villages and would probably make a short stop at a fish farm where travellers can buy some extra seafood to supplement their meals on the junks, or perhaps just for the visitors to have a peek into the basic living of the villagers.
The tourism boom in recent years should bring a bit of extra income for the villagers, but to be frank… what they get is only a very small chunk of the Halong tourism business. Well, I guess a little is better than nothing.

OMG! I love the photos very very much! How i wish i can be there…..the first second and the last pic is just perfect! Good job!
Hey man, love the photos. I first learned of Halong Bay watching “No Reservations” with the Traveling Chef Anthony Bourdain. Since I also do some Asian cooking I’ve been lusting after a bottle of Cat-Hai fish sauce. The best I can do here in the states is “One Crab” which is Thai, and not bad, and of course there is a ton of crappy Philippine Patis. How can I get some of that awsome Viet Namese fich sauce???
Thanks for the compliments.
interval… not sure where you are from, so I can’t really tell. I doubt you can find it online, and if you really can’t find it at local stores… try visiting a Vietnamese restaurant and ask the staff on where to buy the fish sauce.
nice photos!! i like the last one very much. hope to visit this place some day.
gorgeous pics!
by the way, china has mountains like those too!
but maybe some will say they’re incomparable.
kyon… glad you like it.
bb… I guess you are talking about Guilin, famous for similar mountainous and water views. Not really sure if it’s comparable… but I can probably provide my own point of view next year… is planning to visit Guilin in April 2009 :)
you seem to be doing lots of travel, nice lifestyle you have :envy:
Not really a lot… 2-3 trips per year is quite average for travel lovers. Besides, all the places I go are relatively cheap travel destinations.
Don’t just envy… you can do it too if you want to :)
i love the pic. im so proud of my country. :)
