Hong Kong actress Gigi Lai announced on Monday (Oct 20) her retirement from entertainment world after 23 years into the show business.

Hong Kong actress Gigi LaiThe 37-year-old actress made the announcement during a promotion event for her latest (and probably last) TV series “The Gems of Life”.

Gigi stated that she wants to spend more time on family matters, presumably to take care of her brother who was badly injured in a car accident in May 2007.

There are rumours that another reason behind her decision is to prepare for her marriage with a low profile millionaire; she denied about it though.

Gigi has starred in more than 50 movies and drama series over the years. Her career first peaked in mid-90s with the “Young and Dangerous” movies, but then gone downwards for a few years before making a successful return into drama acting in 2004 and remains popular since then.

To be frank, I’m not really going to miss her acting… wishing her all the best anyway.

I’d say the latter is probably true. Made her fame and money in showbiz now she found a “low profile” millionaire to live off of the rest of her days. Nice cozy life, nice cozy retirement. Gold digger.

didn’t know that she is that old, she looks hot for a woman in late 30s. i only start to like her recently, her acting used to be very bad, but is improving a lot after working with tvb. too bad she choose to retire now… all the best to her, hope her brother will get well soon.

cole… well, it’s human instinct to find another half that is compatible, if not better than who we are ain’t so?

kyon… ya, she does improve a lot over the years, and she looks good indeed for a woman of her age.

Find someone Compatible or also rich?? I guess it’s also human instinct for anyone to look for security.

Gigi has always been a great actress. Yes, I have to agree that her singing is not great. You guys are just Gigi haters. What a great lost to TVB for losing Gigi. If you look at TVB actresses nowadays, their choice and standards have gone down. They would just promote anyone that wants to be an actor. Such shame because there are so many beautiful HK people yet they pick the ugliest to represent them. I used to love watching TVB dramas. However, after The Gem of Life I will retire from TVB too. Sick of seeing all the ugly entertainers and bad acting. Good luck TVB.

Hm, I’ve liked Gigi in some TVB dramas, and the others were just horrible because her acting is over-exaggerated and whatnot. Not too familiar with her personality, but she’s really pretty especially for her age.

As for her being a “gold-digger”, it’s a rumour after all, so I wouldn’t think negatively of her for that. And even if it was true, don’t most females look for males who can give them a sense of security? It’s sort of like what Charmaine said in one of her interviews – money is the most reliable thing. *shrug*

Her care for her brother shows how loving she is towards her family though, so I wish her the best anyway. I personally do want her to come back.

And yeah! TVB actors/actresses are so poorly chosen nowadays… they just select the “best-looking” ones, regardless of their talent! Coupled with the horrible plots in the dramas nowadays, TVB’s getting worse over time… Don’t get me wrong though, there are some good actors/actresses such as Raymond and Tavia. xD
