Halloween is primarily a western festival, but more and more young Asians are getting into the bandwagon these days, particularly those who live in big cities… seems like every pubs and night clubs in KL are having a Halloween party of some sort.

I’ve never been interested with Halloween celebrations though; it just doesn’t click for me. Anyway, Happy Halloween, and happy holiday to some of you folks…

Halloween originated from an old celtic festival. Started with the Irish. The gaelic pagans celebrated the season at end of the harvest, but Oct 31 was also regarded as a time when the boundary between the dead and the living dissapeared and the dead became dangerous to living people on earth. They used to build big bonfires and throw bones of slaughtered cows into the fires to scare away the dead as well as wearing costumes representing the evil spirits.

Lots of old superstitions among people back in those days. Was reading recently about the witch hunts in Europe and early America. Especially in Germany. Back in those days people believed everything that happened… good or bad had some sort of spiritual reason., Back before science and the forces of nature were well understood, people constantly lived in fear of evil spirits and such. If disease struck a town it was some sort of curse. If a person went into convulsions for some reason or someone became mentally ill, it had to be evil spirits and possesion at work.

Makes for good horror stories and movie ghosts stories today though. ;)
