Hue Food is a restaurant that sells Hue cuisine in Hanoi, Vietnam. The restaurant is located at 6, Lý Thường Kiệt Street; found this via a local newspaper’s food column during my Hanoi visit in July 2008.
Hue is a historic city in central Vietnam and was the imperial capital of Nguyễn Dynasty (1802-1945). Vietnamese food in general can be divided into three categories… the northern food, southern food and central food (which is often referred as Hue food).
One of the distinctive difference between Hue food and other Vietnamese food is the popularity of roundish vermicelli (bún) instead of the flat rice noodle (phở) in other Vietnamese region. Hue food also tends to be a bit spicier, but still mild in relative to Malaysian or Indian food.
There is a popular Hue dish called the bún bò Huế (Hue beef soup noodle), but I am not quite sure if the noodle soup I had at the restaurant was what I hope it was…

Ordered a few other stuff besides the rice-noodle… some beef, crunchy tofu and grilled meat on bamboo sticks. Decent food quality; nothing that wowed me, but it’s nice, and reasonably priced. Love the beef, which looks dry but quite juicy and tasty.

bún bò Huế is supposed to have a red-ish chile pepper look to it. should look more like this: http://www.donatourist.com/images/bunbohue.jpg
Thanks for the pic foodisgood. This reminds me that they had a large bottle of reddish pepper sauce on the table, which if I had added into my bowl of rice-noodles, might give a more similar look.
Uhm… Isn’t bún bò huế suppose to have little oils floating at the top because of the way they cook the meat? o – O And the picture that you had looked like it was just phờ. Mabbe I’m wrong. Oh well. xD
That’ doesn’t look like bun bo hue. The soup is too clear…suppose to look red and has oil on top.
Thanks for the comments… it’s quite apparent now that what I had was not bun bo hue, but some other bún that I am not sure what its name is lol.
Actually, Yein Jee…from what you described above…it does sound like you had bún bò huế. Others are correct in that the broth should be darker with an oily reddish color that usually floats to the top of the broth. But the coloring is due to the spicy pepper seasoning which you said was in a bottle on the table…unless it was just Sarachi or hot pepper paste…but you would know the different, right? All the ingredients in the noodle bowl pictured above are traditional items in bún bò huế. They must put the pepper seasoning on the side so people can individualize their bowls. But in any case….YUUUUUMMY! I LOVE Vietnamese food!
All I can remember about the pepper is that it was really hot. I did try a bit and it’s too much to handle lol… can’t remember if it’s dry or oily.
I am so sorry that you ate the wrong” bun bo Hue” it suppose to have alot of chilli sauce, beef . it looks funny to me. This is not authentic food.
it had been change after 1975. I am so sorry that you are not eat good food.
it look better in USA in most of Viet Namese restaurant.
foodisgood
give you the correct bun bo hue picture. no if you want more spicy then put some hot sauce. but the red sauce come from chilli pepper and paprika saute with oil
then saute with beef then put in the beef broth it become red broth.
Diane… nothing to be sorry about. I wasn’t sure if it was bun bo Hue at the first place; I wasn’t tricked or anything… just that I wasn’t sure what I was ordering.
The restaurant is probably targetting local customers instead of foreign visitors, so there’s some communication problem… but the food was nice. The noodle soup although was not what I was hoping for… it’s not bad at all.
I really want to go to Vietnam during the holidays and If I will go I sure going to visit
