A Japanese man has recently started an online petition to urge the government to legalise marriage with a two-dimensional (i.e. anime and comics) character… more than 2400 netizens have signed the petition so far.

The fella states that he is no longer interested with real three dimensional world, but wants to become an inhabitant of a two-dimensional world. He reckons though, that it’s impossible to achieve his dream with present day technology… thus thinking of the possibility to legalise marriage with a two-dimensional character instead.

He also said that he would like to marry Asahina Mikuru (pic) from popular Japanese anime/manga “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” [via Gaijinheart]

    @bb

you know what what you ramble on about you sound just like on of them born again Christians.

While I am a Christian, i’m not a conservative one. I beleive that if two people love each other they should be allowed to be married, and anyone who says otherwise is a fundie.

But trying to marry an anime character is ridiculous in my opinion, sounds more like a stunt that would be done on youtube in a bastardized quest for ratings. Most likely instead of playing regular music during the wedding it would be Weird Al’s Dare to be stupid. And the people on there side of the family would be people like Drew Pickles, Cloud Strife and Puff the magic dragon.

I say let whoever wants to be married, get married. but don’t do stupid s*** like this.

This kind of reminds me of people marrying over world of warcraft, except the people on the other end of the broadband are real…

Maybe this guy should marry the voice actor :P

Like animefans i also wish that i could be in anime, but this is really stupid
If technology were better and there were virtual people that had personalities and characteristics of humans, then i’d have some consideration, but right now, aint gonna happen

This man have dangerous way of thinking. How do you suppose to marry a 2-D character huh. Maybe somebody can wear a cosplay of Mikuru. But who would know this anime/manga have so much impact on a person.

If this petition goes through officials, then I would probably partake just for fun. Like in real life, there will be some fights over some of the different characters, haha. Anyway, hopefully Nobue Itou will still be left for me at the end, although this will not prevent me from getting a real wife ofcourse XD.

Even if this man does marry Mikuru, I will not delete my ‘ecchi’ pictures of her.

This sounds kind of interesting to me but if i were to marry an anime charactar it would be as more of a loke than a marrage.

    i have two different perspectives,
one, as i’m japanese girl. ive spent 15 years of my life in Japan, and know japanese culture well.
second, as i’m Psychological Science student.

from Japanese girl’s perspectives, these otaku-nerds rarely exists in Japan.
we cannot find those otaku nerds outside the city called “akihabara”.
Akihabara is a small city/area in Tokyo where all the otaku’s dream come true.
made(costume’play) cafe, internet cafe , nerdy girls etc..
im not at all surprised to see this happen.
these Otaku people rarely goes outside of their own comfort zone.
they rarely goes outside and see the light of day.
they are lonely, needs comfort, and understanding from the world.

from the psychologist’s perspective, this person is likely to suffer from
anti-social personality, social phobia, low self esteem , depression and lack of self motivation., mostly developed by attitudes from people around them and environment they have grown up in. in their childhood, it is most likely that they never had friends they could connect to, or understanding parents. thus developed an overall phobia to socialise in outside world / reality.

perhaps he is not a ’stupid’ person, but rather confused , and lacks goal in his life and unable to separate his emotions.

it seems that he cannot separate ‘love’ from ‘ fantasy’.

  15. #35. Yein Jee on February 26th, 2009

The definition of OTAKU has become so vague these days; Japanese are probably the only people who really understand the word, whereas people from around the world are having different interpretations.

I just hope that the guy ain’t serious about the petition… perhaps just a prank, humour or something.

    What??
he realy want to marry mikuru?
    how about the other fans?
don’t you think about their feeling?
anime is just anime. you must remember that, and mikuru is still in senior high school right?
I just think you are sick to marry her.
how about your life after you marry her?

  17. #37. fugdabug on March 20th, 2009

I don’t know, actually it seems that the person wants the right to cope with life in a way that he sees fit. Consider this, if he marries a ‘character’… in order for that character to have life it must be continued… he is trying to legally force the companies in one sense to continue publishing and creating manga and anime, with his ‘wife’ as a vital character…
    Don’t throw the psych 101 book out the window yet bunkie!.. I mean I do not consider the person to have a personality that exists in this reality, but then how many real Otaku do?.. =(8)o}
    LUB-N-PEAS~ all!
