A Japanese man has recently started an online petition to urge the government to legalise marriage with a two-dimensional (i.e. anime and comics) character… more than 2400 netizens have signed the petition so far.

Picture of Asahina Mikuru from Japanese anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

The fella states that he is no longer interested with real three dimensional world, but wants to become an inhabitant of a two-dimensional world. He reckons though, that it’s impossible to achieve his dream with present day technology… thus thinking of the possibility to legalise marriage with a two-dimensional character instead.

He also said that he would like to marry Asahina Mikuru (pic) from popular Japanese anime/manga “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” [via Gaijinheart]

i am a huge anime fan, but this is stupid, and sad at the same time. its pity that people can’t separate real world and fantasy, and i am worry for what the man is thinking… no longer interested with real three dimensional world’… it sounds like a sign of intent for suicide.

i hope people can give encouragement to him to live the real life to the fullest and stop overfantasizing. signing the petition is not going to help but will make him fall further into the fantasy.

i’ve heard weird and stupid things over the years but never something like this. he should try to find a woman that has the same characteristics as the anime character.

  3. #3. Anonymous on November 8th, 2008

lol i heard about this a few days ago. i wonder why anyone would want to marry something that isn’t real. kinda odd

  4. #4. bb on November 8th, 2008

sorry if i sound harsh, but this is crazy!
    marriage is not a joke.
this seems even crazier than same-sex marriage.
first of all, how could you marry someone just by your personal preference?
if this becomes legalized, what if someone else wants to marry that same anime character?
who has the right to “claim” an anime character to him/herself?
what if you don’t like that character later? are you gonna get a divorce?
what if you figured you are interested in 3d humans again? are you gonna have an affair?
anime characters are fictional, and can be liked by the whole world. imagine a normal anime fan…wouldn’t he/she feel weird if they knew the anime character that they like is married to a human being?
    it just gets so complicated.
i doubt the petition would help this dude.
he needs to get real and face reality.
sorry if i sound angry or anything…i’m not.
i’m just so amazed by how unbelievable people can get sometimes.

They’re all very realistic looking too.

  16. #16. Anonymous!1!!1! on November 21st, 2008

The wedding will definitely fail because when mikuru is asked “Do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?” She’ll say: “That’s Classified”

  24. #24. AngelusBarney on December 28th, 2008

    @bb

you know what what you ramble on about you sound just like on of them born again Christians.

While I am a Christian, i’m not a conservative one. I beleive that if two people love each other they should be allowed to be married, and anyone who says otherwise is a fundie.

But trying to marry an anime character is ridiculous in my opinion, sounds more like a stunt that would be done on youtube in a bastardized quest for ratings. Most likely instead of playing regular music during the wedding it would be Weird Al’s Dare to be stupid. And the people on there side of the family would be people like Drew Pickles, Cloud Strife and Puff the magic dragon.

I say let whoever wants to be married, get married. but don’t do stupid s*** like this.

  25. #25. werdunloaded on January 1st, 2009

This kind of reminds me of people marrying over world of warcraft, except the people on the other end of the broadband are real…

Maybe this guy should marry the voice actor :P

This man have dangerous way of thinking. How do you suppose to marry a 2-D character huh. Maybe somebody can wear a cosplay of Mikuru. But who would know this anime/manga have so much impact on a person.

  31. #31. Amray on February 2nd, 2009

If this petition goes through officials, then I would probably partake just for fun. Like in real life, there will be some fights over some of the different characters, haha. Anyway, hopefully Nobue Itou will still be left for me at the end, although this will not prevent me from getting a real wife ofcourse XD.

Even if this man does marry Mikuru, I will not delete my ‘ecchi’ pictures of her.

  34. #34. mistresscandy on February 26th, 2009

    i have two different perspectives,
one, as i’m japanese girl. ive spent 15 years of my life in Japan, and know japanese culture well.
second, as i’m Psychological Science student.

from Japanese girl’s perspectives, these otaku-nerds rarely exists in Japan.
we cannot find those otaku nerds outside the city called “akihabara”.
Akihabara is a small city/area in Tokyo where all the otaku’s dream come true.
made(costume’play) cafe, internet cafe , nerdy girls etc..
im not at all surprised to see this happen.
these Otaku people rarely goes outside of their own comfort zone.
they rarely goes outside and see the light of day.
they are lonely, needs comfort, and understanding from the world.

from the psychologist’s perspective, this person is likely to suffer from
anti-social personality, social phobia, low self esteem , depression and lack of self motivation., mostly developed by attitudes from people around them and environment they have grown up in. in their childhood, it is most likely that they never had friends they could connect to, or understanding parents. thus developed an overall phobia to socialise in outside world / reality.

perhaps he is not a ’stupid’ person, but rather confused , and lacks goal in his life and unable to separate his emotions.

it seems that he cannot separate ‘love’ from ‘ fantasy’.

  35. #35. Yein Jee on February 26th, 2009

The definition of OTAKU has become so vague these days; Japanese are probably the only people who really understand the word, whereas people from around the world are having different interpretations.

I just hope that the guy ain’t serious about the petition… perhaps just a prank, humour or something.

  36. #36. Grove on March 19th, 2009

    What??
he realy want to marry mikuru?
    how about the other fans?
don’t you think about their feeling?
anime is just anime. you must remember that, and mikuru is still in senior high school right?
I just think you are sick to marry her.
how about your life after you marry her?

  37. #37. fugdabug on March 20th, 2009

I don’t know, actually it seems that the person wants the right to cope with life in a way that he sees fit. Consider this, if he marries a ‘character’… in order for that character to have life it must be continued… he is trying to legally force the companies in one sense to continue publishing and creating manga and anime, with his ‘wife’ as a vital character…
    Don’t throw the psych 101 book out the window yet bunkie!.. I mean I do not consider the person to have a personality that exists in this reality, but then how many real Otaku do?.. =(8)o}
    LUB-N-PEAS~ all!

This kind of thing is bound to happen when homosexuals all over the world demand the right to marry someone of the same gender. The definition of marriage is being destroyed and now people think it’s OK to marry a dog, a tube of toothpaste, a Victoria Secret magazine, or a mathematical equation.

  42. #42. albeitalways on April 16th, 2009

    @Prop8:

Uh, how the hell did gay marriage influenced this kind of thing to happen? Dude, personally I don’t give a damn about who marries who whether gay, straight or whatever but don’t you think you’re laying too heavy of a claim to them?

Obviously, gay marriage or not, the guy who started this petition has some problems with his perception of reality which can be anything, anything at all, but I hardly believe having gay marriages influenced him to think 2d characters are also realistic in real life.

  43. #43. Adit on April 30th, 2009

i think, in todays world anything can happen, you can even marry a lamp post for all i care, marriage is simply a legalized formation of your love to someone, or in this case; something..

I’m neither pro nor contra to the idea. I personally find it a little surreal. But who am i to judge, who are we to judge, eh?

I say let him, what harm can it bring to us? Disturbing? i dont think so.. Maybe legal implications like royalty, such and such is gonna be a little cumbersome, but nothing we cannot solve, eh?

Love is your personal thing, your decision. I dont see why we should discriminate love on what we think it should be. Didnt people say love has no boundaries? Applies too here..

  44. #44. 987654 on May 6th, 2009

I know that this isn’t hilarious because i’ve been down and all in a depression because of Asahina Mikuru, the problem was the fact that she isn’t real, and i just couldn’t accept that. On actual days, i don’t care anymore, but i still preffer Asahina Mikuru, but i know that she isn’t real, so w/e, just a dream.

This guy should know that anime characters are meant to look like real people so why don’t he just find a real *underlined twice… “look-a-like” of Asahina. (Besides the new season of the Haruhi’s anime needs her as all the guys will die without her XD)

  60. #60. Ok... what the..? on September 11th, 2009

Well at Prop8’s point of view, he / she is probably another radical christian who thinks marriage is only meant for a male n female.

Anybody can marry each other, i am not homophobic at all; heck i don’t really care if two same sexual partners marry each other.

But what he/she said bout a dog, toothpaste or a mathematical equation is going a little too far into saying something like that.

But those who wanna marry a cartoon / anime character are probably desperate or in denial or just not lucky at all.

  61. #61. annazpiggybear on September 13th, 2009

i wonder how its going to even work between him and his “wife”

it’s not like they can communicate with each other, or reproduce…

i don’t really see how their “love” can work.

did that man ever thought of that?

  62. #62. Anti-Liberal on September 13th, 2009

In my opinion, I think this guy should at least find a real-life woman that has Anime-like physical and personality traits. I’m sure that he can find a handful of those kind of women around the world, especially in Japan since most Anime girls look Japanese.

In the USA where I live at, I’ve seen plenty of women that resemble the characteristics of Anime women, both physically and attitude-wise. Think about it: real-life women have the capability of possessing the same hairstyles, hair colors, body shapes and personalities as what Anime women have; the obvious and only exception being those large-shaped and sparkling eyes that Anime women typically have.

Furthermore, you’d be surprised at how magnificent the human brain transforms all kinds of visual objects and sounds that are seen and heard into a self-driven fantasy that a person might desire to bring about; in other words, it is certainly plausible for an individual to be 100% pleasured by his fantasizing that a real-life woman he loves “looks like” an Anime woman, especially if that woman has Anime-like qualities. After all, the brain is the most complex human structure ever studied by psychologists thus far; it would be of bad taste to underplay the vast, mysterious and exotic powers the brain has.

  63. #63. John on September 14th, 2009

Why are these jerks so judgemental? I, for one, wants to marry Mikuru Asahina. By the way, these otaku-nerds are not new.

An ancient legend called Pygmalion will tell the story.

Pygmalion (represents the Otaku-nerds) is a great sculptor who decided to create a sculpture. He names the sculpture Galatea (represents Mikuru). Pygmalion then slowly develops an otaku-like fetishism to Galatea, which became more and more like true love. He falls to a depression, but the Greek goddess of Love, Aphrodite (here not as a sapient lifeform, but represents Love itself), pitied him and brought Galatea to life. Pygmalion and Galatea lived happily.

Moral: Emotions penetrate even the hardest laws of physics.

  66. #66. BiggestNobody on November 8th, 2009

oh my god. i really cannot believe something like this actually happened T_T

i mean really? are you so socially inept that you shut your eyes to the world and delve into anime for “love”?

sorry i understand everybody is different and our viewpoints are all different no matter how similar they could POSSIBLY be. but this is just flat out ridiculous

perhaps in his mind he’s right. but if he were to actually WAKE UP, he might realize there are PEOPLE out in the world who he could easily put himself out there to find and maybe fall in love with. saying he has no love for our dimension and wanting to be a freakin anime character just shows how lonely and socially awkward he is.

contrary to popular belief of people who are lonely. its not that hard to find a woman. and hey if it doesnt work the first time, well now you know the one for you is still out there, waiting to be found T_T.

and theres the end of today’s rant. thanks for watching.

“Mari Makinami Illustrious is now mai waifu.”

I will give you a taste of my Spear of Longinus if you try to lay your hanz on haa. —> The anime company or whoever holds the license or rights for the character will have to issue some sort of certificate to whoever wins the bid for her. Only one lucky guy should be able to marry a particular character, unless they are willing to accept and acknowledge other partners for the character.

In the case where marriage is granted to just one person, I see problems arising from jealousy. It won’t be long before another truck runs through Akihabara again, or Ikebukuro. Hatred from other fans would be the only thing that I fear :(
