Korean singer Kim Jang-hoon collapsed on stage during a live performance on June 28; he managed to regain his conciousness in a short while and was sent to hospital for treatment. Reports suggested that he has overworked himself and requires plenty of rest to recover from exhaustion.
Kim Jang-hoon is not the first Korean artist admitted to hospital for overworking recently; just a week ago rapper MC Mong was hospitalised for exhaustion too… and cases like these happen a bit too often in Korean entertainment world.
The hardworking South Koreans
In fact, lots of other Koreans are facing overworking problems too. Forbes released a report last month that South Koreans work the longest hours per year (among 32 researched countries)… they work on average 2,357 hours per year (six-and-a-half hours daily), almost doubled the Dutch at the bottom (1,391 hours per year).
Considering that Seoul is the most expensive city to live in Asia, I can understand the need for them to work hard… but nothing matters more than health (and ultimately life); they need to enjoy their lives a little bit more.

This is insane . When will Koreans ever learn how to relax, chill and enjoy their life .
why in hell do they overwork themselves ?? i don’t get .I understand that Seoul expensive city, but why overwork to death yourself ?
Laziness should be a virtue ..i am lazy ,and hate to work .All right i went bit to far with that statement, but people need to enjoy their life. I am so lucky and blessed that i enjoy my life ,and don’t work . My mother makes a lot of money .
I am so so so lucky .Thank god for my mother .Without her i would be homeless ..with no money .I need to find work later..because i sit too much at home ,doing nothing but watching internet .
Yein Jee are you busy ? do you work a lot ? if so , do you hate it ?
i know its bad , but i am laziest person in world !!! maybe luckiest too , lol !!
Last question if you don’t mind ?
Yein Jee ..why you did not respond back to my email .
I sent you email ,but you ignored it . I guess you hate me ?
but anyway..i am not going to bother you . You can delete it ,if you want .
I guess i may have to accept being a hermit ?
I’ve also been saying S.Korea showbiz is moving too fast. Too much too fast. However, that’s entertainment. The show business pushes people to their limits and beyond. Do a radio date here, a concert there, a promo signing, then on the bus or plane to the next town to do it again….all with very little if any sleep or relaxation time in between. The big money machine of showbiz. It don’t care if you ive or die, just make more shows and make more money. And of course the stars have little say so about it all when their record labels and managers are pushing them so hard. This crazy celebrity work scheduling and life style goes all the way back to Elvis. The stars become exausted, some even take drugs to sleep to wake up, to eat, just so they can keep going. They become out of touch and out of control and their bodies finally say “enough”. But the fortune and fame machine keeps on rolling with or without them. It’s crazy.
i don’t think it’s that they don’t enjoy life.
it’s just that they don’t take much time to relax.
some people might find working really enjoyable.
but for some celebs, it’s not up to them to decide their work schedule.
no one should be blamed for working too hard.
to work hard is a good asset.
working too hard is at least better than being too lazy.
they probably will realize the importance of their health sooner or later.
Burger… after all the words that you have said, do you expect me to reply to your email? I have given you chances after chances, and you wasted it over and over again. This is your last one, don’t flop it needlessly.
No I don’t hate you, you are not important enough for me to hate you.
im glad that kim jang hoon is ok, he is a good man, very supportive to charity work. i read from somewhere that this concert is also a chartiy concert too.
average 6.5 hours daily doesn’t sound a lot to me. malaysians and singaporeans are working around that hours too…. or is it asians overall are working too hard haha!!??
Yein Jee you’re right .But you don’t even know me ,and you judge me.
I am not a bad person. You lucky ,because you had your father ,but i didn’t .
why cant you understand me at least. My swearing was bad on my part ,but i am not as lucky as you. Don’t you understand, that people are shaped by their surroundings ,like environment ? people that grow up poor ,or with bad parents usually became bad as well.
I never knew my biological father at all.
Burger… what you did was a disgrace, and you know that. You cursed, stalked and threatened me… although I was not taking your threat seriously, how am I supposed not to judge you and to be nice with you?
I have seen people growing up in tougher environment than just without a father, get over it and stop using your upbringing as your excuse… it sounds pathetic.
I was wrong . Good luck to you , you seem like nice person . I wasn’t thinking …it difficult .i am impulsive ..but i am not going to curse at you anymore .
i was cursing ,threatening you ,because i had bad day . You so calm ,at least tell me your secret …how do you manage to be so calm ??
Boxer Mike Tyson grew up in ghetto ,his father beat his mother , and he was criminal.but boxing saved his life ..he also bit Holifield ears . Do you know Mike Tyson ??- he is African American boxer . If i be nice to you , are you going to answer my email ??? please ..i am sorry for causing you pain .
Burger… how many times have you been saying the same old sorry? You have had your chances, don’t bother apologising anymore. No, I won’t answer your email no matter what you do. In fact, I am not really interested in having discussion with you here as well, this would be my final response… and thanks for reading my stuff, that’s the only good thing I can say to you.
Stars like many people gets hyped up on working and doesn’t realize that they need a minute to relax and enjoy what they worked for. Like my parents say “there’s time for work and there’s time for play.”
You are racist , I am done with you . I don’t need that bull .
Yein Jee you not worth my time too. There is no use arguing with you .
You stupid bastard !!!
Now ,because of you ,i think all Chinese people are bad !!!
you just made your race look bad . You think you are so good and all.
i am not racist ,but you made all Malasians look bad !!!
Thanks god …i don’t live in Malaysia with you . F***k you !!!
you little piece of shit . I am not going to waste my time on you .Pathetic little shit !!
I don’t like you !! you don’t like me !!!
-End of story-
I wont miss you !!!
Asshole !!!!!!!!
This is my last comment here !!!
May devil curse you ..
-The end -
looks like we’ve derailed from the initial topic. well, back to that-
anonymous is right to say that korean showbiz is moving at an incredibly fast pace. many of its stars and starlets are being overworked, exhausted, and really worked like a dog. albeit the instant riches and rewards, is it worth paying for your life when you see your marketers and agents sit back and reap rewards also, but you being the one who risks your life and limb?
having said that, at the end of the day, the decision is the individuals… though it would be hard not to conform is success is the ambition
[howshouse.com]
Ya, good bye Burger, for the 6th, 7th time now? Just go away, once and for all.
howshouse… you are right on the decision making. With exceptions to those newcomers, most artists do have the choice to work as hard (or as leisure) as they want. I guess the whole culture is there that people should work hard… perhaps to an extend that people would be discriminated if they don’t.
maybe next time Forbes will include the Philippines in the list.. i doubt if it was included…6 and half hours of work is a bit short compared to the people who work here…average hour of work is 8 hours..the longest is 12 hours! more of course if you OT…in my opinion, filipinos are more hardworking but you all know where the hardwork ends…the governent…corruption has been and will be forever stuck in our country…if not for the corrupt people…Philippines would be a much nicer place to live in…
The list is not complete obviously… and I am not sure how they get the average. If they include those unemployed as well, it would even out that the working class might work longer than 6.5 hours on average (need to count in weekends too).
Ya, Philippines have been in a slump for the past two decades. High populations but stagnant economics… corruption probably plays a great part. I am having similar concerns with Malaysia too, we are not doing too well for the past few years… but I guess we are still relatively peaceful here.
