A group of Korean animal rights activists held a demonstration at a large dog meat market in Seongnam-si (near Seoul) last weekend to protest against dog eating.

Dog meat is a common food in Korea; Koreans have been eating dog meat for thousand of years. One of the popular dishes is Bosintang (literally ‘invigorating soup’), a traditional Korean soup with dog meat as its primary ingredient which is very popular during summer season.

It’s estimated that over a million of dogs are slaughtered every year in Korea to meet market demand. The younger Korean generations however are beginning to ditch this tradition.

i think dog meat is more popular in korea than china. they even have canned dog meats in korea, but in china they are not that open in dog eating.

  4. #4. Edrei on July 29th, 2008

I say that dogs are nice.

Especially simmered in a stew, they are delicious.

No really…if you’re going to protest against dogs you might as well protest against veal, chicken, lamb and in fact any other animal out there. Has anyone seen how you get veal or how a cows are slaughtered? Such hypocrisy.

Thank goodness the younger generation starts to ditch this tradition. Eating man’s best friend is unacceptable >.<

Oh btw, thanks for the wishes ;)

Same thought with MimieJay, thought only China does. Support the protest.

i think this is stupid. they probably slaughter more chickens and cows than dogs. they should protest against other animals too and not just the dogs.

honestly i really don’t care if people in korea and china eat dogs. so what if people keep dogs as pets? people raise chickens, cows, and pigs just to kill them and sell their meat. they feed them and make them plump and fat and bam off to the market.

I’ve heard about that before. Only hat particular breed is used to eat. They have kennels to breed that particular dog. It’s kind of a delicacy in Korea. Sort of like monkey brains in another country ( I forget which one).

Anyway, I’ve seen undercover videos of the dog slaughter houses and the real cruelty is the way they torture and tramatize the dogs before they kill them. The reason for it? Get this, it’s a belief that if the dogs are excited by trama of some sort such as hanging from a tree and beating it before slaughter, then it makes the meat more tender or something because of the adrenalin flow produced from the trama or torture inflicted. Therefore, the meat is worth more to sell to the resturants. It’s ridiculous!

In other words, even though it is cruel to the dogs and it is definitly not right, the intention on the Koreans’ part is strictly to improve the quality of the meat. It’s crazy…and frankly a silly old superstition that has no real scientific or biological basis.

Eating dogs are cruel..mean..inhuman. They are just too adorable to be treated as a dish. Chickens are not cute:P lol

china can’t be the only country that eats dogs.
there has to be more countries too, but they’re obviously less known for doing so.
i heard that in some parts of china, eating dogs is against the law now.
so china isn’t really that bad now…you can’t blame the whole race for being cruel to man’s best friend. believe it or not, my mom told me that she’ve heard of people who eats cats and even rats. it’s very disgusting…but people does it, or at least they used to do it.

it’s interesting how humans, especially the younger generation have more sympathy for dogs than any other kind of animal. i also think dogs are adorable.
as humans, we shouldn’t be so selfish and we shouldn’t be letting such cruel things happen to another kind of species. but it’s also unfair how we show so much care for the dogs, but not for the other animals we kill, sell and eat everyday.
it’s an uneasy thing to make decisions on.

even though it will be nice to see us not killing animals anymore, it’s impossible.
life is a cycle. not just humans eat animals. animals eat each other too.
this is meant to be. or else, why couldn’t we all be herbivores?
humans might seem a bit selfish for their massive killing of all these animals for food. but humans control the world. they have the power to do so.
imagine if it were animals who are controlling the world now, do you not think they will eat humans too? will animals have so much sympathy for us humans then?

many different animals humans kill for food die in cruel ways. not just dogs. sharks are also cruelly killed just for humans to get their fins. i also heard in japan, they eat dolphin meat too. and again, they kill them in an awful way.

there are just too many things people can protest on.
it’s good that the younger generation is getting concerned about these issues.
maybe one day, no dogs are ever gonna be killed for food anymore.
i know we love dogs. but if we’re so nice, we should care about the other animals too, right?
i guess for now, just think of this as a cycle of life.
pray for the doggies. and if you have a dog, treasure him!

this also has been a tradition in the Philippines but they do not sell dog meat,,, poor dogs in Korea :(

A lots of things in the world are more than just right or wrong, black or white… there are lots of grey areas of uncertainties.

From my personal point of view… if eating dogs are wrong, it would be wrong to eat cows, pigs and chickens as well. Until the day I become a vegetarian (which I can’t see it coming yet)… I have nothing against dog eating. I might find it hard to actually trying it myself though.

I think the big thing that people get concerned with is the way in which animals are slaughtered for eating. In the states there are regulations that are followed when beef and poultry etc are killed to package for eating. there are mandatory rules requiring quick humane methods of slaughter, and a business can be penalized if violating those rules.
In Korea many of these dogs are tortured and abused before slaughtered. That’s what’s angers some people.

I think this is all very ironic…

First I agree with Edrei in a way that if we protest against dog eating, we should also protest against eating of any meat. Even though we dont raise cows or pigs to be our pets, dogs fits in, domestically, with the rest of the meat. So if were sitting here eating beef and saying dog eating is unethical, we in turn, are being hypocrites…

Second the issue about humane treatment of animals right before being slaughtered.. well to be honest, if theyre going to die anyways why bother giving them an ethical treatment before theyre killed? I dont know if im the only one seeing this or maybe because im not an american born who was immersed in its arrogance, however i dont see the logical point in giving a ethical treatment to an animal thats about to get killed….

Yeah i realize that i would also want a peaceful death but am i going to be served on a plate afterwards im dead to a hungry customer? hell no.. but dogs, along with cows, pigs and chickens face that future and i think its futile to do something that will drastically improve their well being once they’ve made it to the infamous slaughterhouse…

sean, I disagree. I’d rather have a quick death than a painful one, & I’m sure they would to. just becuase it’s dying dosn’t mean you should inflick extra pain to it, and what’s the point of that anyways? only sick people do something like that. also, just becuase the states have “rules” doesn’t mean they follow them, and they don’t alot of times. example, veal… nothing about that is humane.I would agree that alot of americans are arrogant, but not for that reason. they are hypocrites. an animal is an animal (including us). my husband has eaten dog meat when he was little, his grandmother feed it to him. he loves dogs thou, and we are both vegetarians. I just hate it when I say something about that, people think he should “go back to his country” becuase he’s screwed up, but that is just ignorant. besides the fact that he didn’t eat than on his own, they eat meat as well.
anyways, I’m glad my sister and brother are protesting this. I wouldn’t be as against it if it wasn’t for the tourturing part.

  16. #16. Anonymous on December 10th, 2008

    this is wack

  17. #17. Anonymous on February 21st, 2009

i agree with edrei if you guys are protesting on how Koreans should stop eating dog meat. You guys should also protest about any meat. I don’t eat dog but honestlly this picture is so fake and racist. Instead of showing this picture actually find a picture that has dog in the soup.

Oh yeah, by the way. many people from the U.S go to South Korean alot, and alot of them try dog there and like it. So, this publisher should SHUT UP and delete this picture for racism.

As has been highlighted in the comments already posted, there could be an endless debate about which animals should or should not be eaten. But there should be NO QUESTION AT ALL that the animal, be it chicken, pig, dog, whatever, should be raised and killed humanely. How can these subhuman Koreans condone torturing animals to death by hanging, burning, electrocution etc.?? Are they the most heartless savages on this planet? I hope that everyone of them who has been involved in this dies as soon as possible. Backward, slanty eyed, cruel, perverted monsters. Sorry if the truth seems a bit blunt. Die you parasites! AIDS! Tsunamis, Rabies, let’s get rid of you all!!!!!

  19. #19. Random user on August 17th, 2009

Why are you attacking people for eating dogs because they are cute? Pigs are also super-cute and as a fact even more sentient than dogs yet we eat pigs all the time without thinking about this. If you’re protesting against eating meat in general, I do not agree but I can understand. If you are protesting against eating dogs and in turn gorging on pigs, you are truly a big hypocrite.

Anyways, they way they kill dogs is cruel. If they treat them decently and kill them humanely, it’s OK, but I am against inhumane killing of the dogs.

And my comment was directed at the public.
