Chinese singer Liu Huan and British soprano Sarah Brightman will jointly present the theme song of the Beijing Olympic Games at the opening ceremony on Friday.

Liu Huan is an iconic singer in China; it’s not surprising that he is picked to sing the theme song. I am a bit surprised that Sarah Brightman is chosen though… as I think China have a pool of local talents that can perform quite as well.

Regardless, I like Sarah Brightman, so I’m not complaining much. This will be her second time singing the Olympics theme song; her first performance was in Barcelona 1992 with José Carreras, with Amigos Para Siempre (Friends for Life)…

The official theme song for Beijing Olympics is still a secret and will make its debut at the opening ceremony. There are a few popular non-official theme songs though, e.g. “Beijing Welcomes You” and “Beijing Olympics” etc.

Update - the official theme song revealed; check out other theme songs as well.

Well, there must be some reasons why they want to pick a foreign singer… international presence might be one of them, but I don’t think it matter that much.

At the end of the day it’s the quality of the song that matters.

lovely song, i hope the beijing theme song will be as nice. seoul 1988 and barcelona 1992 have nice theme songs… i can’t remember the songs from then onwards.

I tend to agree with picking a foreign singer to sing with the Chinese singer. It is international and the olympic games is supposed to be as much symbolic of countries coming together as it is sports and competition.

She sounds good in this video but I thought the little ’sexual’ caress she made up her side and across her neck was a little out of place for the olympics. It just seemed a little intended to indicate a certain interpretation of that lyric. I’m like, what was that for?? Other than that, the barcalona performance was nice.

    Aaahhh
are you a fan of Sarah Brightman?
I have been following her for years and got about 14 of her albums and was at her concert once.
She did a very good job in both Olympics songs.

Not quite a fan yet… I know about her mostly for her works with other tenors, like Jose and Bocelli etc. I can’t remember listening to her singing solo, but I’ve always like her voice.

    Hello,

I think the Olympic song song was absolutely beautiful. Its simplicity not only captured the world’s imagination, but managed to covey a much bigger picture, like global harmony and perfect peace. She also went out her way to sing parts in Chinese which was terribly brave of her to say the least, and I really think she pulled it off flawlessly. The video is lovely also and I recently acquired the triple CD set and also the Jackie Chan one & they are so serene.
