UK’s Newcastle University has expelled 49 students from China and one from Taiwan after the certificates they used to gain entry were found to be forged.
Most of the students had enrolled on business studies courses which started in September, but the university became suspicious when the students were unable to keep up with work. Their applications were rechecked and forged English language and degree certificates were discovered.
Newcastle University said many of the students appeared to be victims of bogus agents based either in China or the UK; but it was necessary to exclude them to protect the interests of other properly qualified students [more on BBC]
Personally I find it hard to believe that the students were not aware of the forgery or at least suspicious of what the ‘bogus’ agents were doing to get them enrolled… wonder what kind of documents they might forge when they get into the job market.

More Chinese dishonesty? This is really getting to be dissapointing. Makes one wonder if any Chinese can be trusted. That’s sad because I have a real interest in Chinese language and culture.
Even a few Chinese that I have known admitted to me that many Chinese are dishonest. That’s sad. :(
I agree with you YeinJee, I find t hard to believe that some of them didn’t know.
The idea of publishing and accepting only applicants from a list of approved agents is a good start for the Uni but I think the school should do more by conducting English exams themselves either on campus or with a representative from the school just to double check the validility of all certificates in the future.
I too sometimes wonder about how SOME [not all, others have excellent English skills that are even better than the locals] of the international students that were able to quality for a uni place when it’s obvious that their English is not up to standard.
Thank god, the uni that I attend has stopped allowing the use of dictionaries for International Students in exams, in the belief that if they had a high enough understanding of English to qualify for the certificate and a placement at the uni, they would not need a dictionary for the exam [which doesn't even use "difficult" English to warrant the use of it in the first place].
And don’t get me started on group work and essays. I had a guy who basically took chunks out from websites and paste it into the assignment. The time we took to edit his section still pisses me off when I think about it.
