A recent Korean survey, based on 183 respondents out of 2000 entertainers, found that one out of five actresses was forced to provide sexual entertainment to influential figures or witnessed their colleagues being forced to do so.

This indicates the late Jang Ja-yeon, who committed suicide in March because of her coerced involvement in casting couch favours, was not an isolated victim in the Korean entertainment industry [more on Koreatimes]

Casting couch is a situation that involves trading of sexual favours in return for employment or for career advancement; a term which is often used in (but not limited to) the film industry [wiki]

It’s not surprising that such practise do exist, but the figure is quite astonishing nonetheless. I would have thought that only some dubious agencies would involve in these scandalous schemes… but the result (if trustable) shows that a few of the ‘reputable’ companies might be involved as well.

Meanwhile, CEO of Jang’s former agency has been arrested after being deported back from Japan where he had been hiding since the scandal was exposed.

i am not that surprise, 19% sounds possible, but i think some actresses are willing to follow and not forced to do so.

It depends how you interpret the word ‘forced’. It doesn’t have to be physical or abusive; if an actress is let to know that she must sleep with others to get a role… that’s forceful enough imo.

You always hear about such conservative asians but this shocks me. Asians are always saying how wild American women are, but they might not be so innocent themselves….

Are you sure it’s only 20%? I can’t believe how naive some people can be. Show biz in every country has been grimey and sleazy for the past cemtury. Hell, even young kabuki actors in feudal Japan performed sexual favors. I won’t be surprised if male entertainers like DBSK are doing it too. People go opt for a show biz career grew up in the messed up fringes of society anyway; it’s no surprise that the business is infiltrated with their immoral values and ideas. Grow up kids.
