   Thought a little history of Levis would be nice post.

   In 1853, the California gold rush was going strong, and everyday items were in short supply. Levi Strauss, a 24-year-old German immigrant, left New York for San Francisco with a small supply of dry goods to try and sell to the gold miners. Shortly after his arrival, a prospector wanted to know what Mr. Strauss was selling. When Strauss told him he had rough canvas to use for tents and wagon covers, the prospector said, “You should have brought pants!,” saying he couldn’t find a pair of pants strong enough to last.

   So, Levi decided to use his tough canvas to make overalls for the miners to wear. Miners liked the pants, but they were so rough they chafed their skin. Levi Strauss then substituted a twilled cotton cloth from France called “serge de Nimes.” The fabric later became known as denim and the pants were nicknamed blue jeans.

   Later in 1873 he created and co-patented with David Jacobs the copper rivets used to make the pockets stronger.

   Speaking of “signature”, I like the soundtrack on the video with the ’signature’ Chuck Berry guitar licks. Love that old time American rock-n roll.

   I agree YeinJee. And what I love about that story is that Levi Strauss was not even a tailor or clothing designer at first. Just a guy trying to sell canvas for wagons and tents to the gold miners.

   what I meant to say was to the miners and panhandlers, a lot of those gold prospectors during the gold rush would squat in the creeks and streams of water and sift rocks through their pans looking for gold nuggets. I think I also read that Levis’ original pants also had big pockets or pouches to put rocks and nuggets in.
