Korean pop star Rain in Hawaii for lawsuitKorean pop star Rain and his former agency JYP Entertainment were ordered to pay ~USD8.1 million in damages to a Hawaiian event promoter for cancelling a concert in June 2007.

The judgement was made by a federal court on March 19th in Honolulu; both Rain and JYPE have stated their intention to appeal against the decision.

Rain’s Hawaiian concert at Aloha Stadium was cancelled a few days before the scheduled date; he is facing another lawsuit in LA for cancelling a concert just hours before the show (same tour as the Hawaii concert).

Rain’s spokesperson and JYPE’s representative have expressed their surprise with the verdict, saying that they expected themselves to win the case.

Frankly speaking, it would be very naive if they thought they could win… a concert was cancelled, and they don’t have a really good reason not to compensate, or at least share the damages with the concert promoter.

Asian fans might be shocked with the sum though; in Asian cases the compensations would normally for direct financial loses while neglecting other intangible aspects (e.g. punitive, reputation damage)… obviously it doesn’t work that way in the States.

[update] Rain and JYPE reached agreed on a settlement with Click Entertainment; the amount was not disclosed, but it’s expected to be much lower than the initial compensation [via KBS]

Hope, if you really hate people who spread malicious rumours, you should have kept the “JYP set up Rain” story to yourself… because it’s the most ridiculous accusation among all comments. See the irony?

No fans would like to see their stars being criticised online, that I can understand. Most of us here have nothing against Rain in person, but thinking that he could have handle the situations (pre-concert, concert cancellation and post mortem) in better ways… so, chill down.

Always respect other’s opinions; however, labeling Rain as the perpetrator for cancellations is going way out on flimsy limbs. It’s nonsensical to assume that the artist would have the last say on performances.

Appears that Hope and some others have inside info pertinent to the concerts, litigation and JYP’s involvement. As with all things, tme will tell – eventually truth will prevail. For Rain’s sake, hope it’s much sooner than later! He needs to be exonerated.

Until then, those in the know, need to educate the naysayers – thank you, Hope,
for taking a stand and dealing with the fingers pointing in the wrong direction and unfortunately being labeled “obsessive” vs. what you prove you are: supportive, loyal, informed. Aja aja!

To everyone: Enough is enough, you’re all going out of sink here. This is really getting out of hand. Geez, can’t we just read this, and believe in Rain. I truly believe the MAN UPSTAIRS is watching, and he is there for him. He might have problems, but in the long run he will make good. Please believe that, and lets go on with our lives.

    Thank you.
