Miss Venezuela Stefanía Fernández was crowned the 58th Miss Universe in Nassau, Bahamas, on Sunday (Aug 23).

Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez, Miss Universe 2009

The 18-year-old became Venezuela’s sixth Miss Universe winner; it’s also the first time ever for representatives from the same country to win consecutive Miss Universe title, with Dayana Mendoza crowning in 2008.

I sure hope hope next year they would give Asian beauties a second look. Some, I think should be in the final 10. But oh, Stefania is really a beauty to behold! Venezuela, good for you, you got the crown twice in a row. Congratulations! :-)

I agree, there wasn’t one asian contestant in the top 15.

AS EXPECTED, ANOTHER ARTIFICIALLY ENHANCED BEAUTY FROM VENEZUELA WON THE PAGEANT. SHE DOESN’T EVEN SPEAK ENGLISH NOR WAS SHE ABLE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION CORRECTLY. APPARENTLY, THERE’S OBVIOUS DISCRIMINATION OF NATURAL BEAUTIES COMING FROM ASIA AS NONE WAS INCLUDED IN THE FINAL 15. THESE GIRLS WERE JUST WASTING THEIR TIME AND MONEY JOINING THIS CONTEST.

Don’t make it into a racist issue. Beauty is a subjective matter, and the judges obviously favoured the Latin this year. Yeah, it’s unfortunate for the Asian pageants, but it’s probably a bit over to call this a discrimination.

Besides, it’s a private show… it’s run by a corporate and not an international body like the Olympics; there’s no absolute guide on a fair for all contest, everything is up to the judges’ personal preferences.

BIG titties is a must for a winner candidate

Keep in mind the Miss Universe Pageant was created in 1952 by an American swimsuit company because a former Miss America contestant refused to wear one of their suits. So, answering questions correctly takes a second chair to appearance in a swimsuit understandably. This contest is about looks despite what some may prefer to believe.

In addition, Venezuela has had the most wins of one nation second only to the U.S. by only one win. Puerto Rico is number 3. And Latin countries in general have had more wins combined than the U.S. or any country.

The U.S. has not won a pageant in 12 years since 1997.

Japan won two, one in 1959 and the their most recent one in 2007.

Thailand won two, 1965 and 1988.

In 1952 when the pageant was created, places like China or North Korea were not gonna be likely candidates for a swimsuit beauty contest in the free world for quite a long time, due to politics and conservative cultures in Asia over the decades.

So, let’s give it time. The asian world is slowly but surely coming out and joining in. We’ll see more winners soon enough.

    Oh I forgot to mention

    Philippines in 1969 and 1973
    India in 1994 and 2000.

And Russia won one time in 2002 but was dethroned and the crown was passed to Panama’s 1st runner up.

    Correction:

I meant to say places like China and Korea…not just North Korea.

Maybe Yeinjee can shed some light on the situation with Malaysia in regards to their participation in the Miss Universe pageant over the years. They’ve always been a pretty conservative country anyway, have they not? Especially in light of the recent controversy over the beer drinking incident with the former model. Seems posing in a skimpy swimsuit is something that’s looked apon as a little negative for a majority traditionally conservative culture.

Asian countries are conservative in relative; and there’s more taboos involved in predominantly Islamic countries. So I guess Malaysia can be counted as a conservative country to be frank.

There’s a huge cultural difference between Islamic and general western perceptions; lots of the forbidden stuff in Islamic practises are seen as inhuman to some others… the drinking issue for example. It’s a matter of different perceptions, and it’s going to be a never ending debate.

Malaysians are governed by constitutional law; there are another set of Islamic law which only holds Muslims into account but not enforceable to non Muslims (drinking for example).

Since that Muslims are not allowed to take part in Miss Universe; there’s not much issue about that. Most Malaysians do know how to respect (or at least not to mess with) each others cultural/religion interest as long as our own are not violated.

Thanks for the tips btw, lots of good info… never knew that the Philippines were crowned twice in the pageant :)

Have to agree with the conservatism part there.

The previous winner of the Miss Universe (Dayana Mendoza) had a cover in Maxim magazine and the pageant actually supported it. I was expecting they were going to condemn it.
