Bulgogi beef stew

Bulgogi (lit. meat fire) stew is one of the common dishes in Korean restaurants around the world, with marinated meat slices (most often beef) cooked on a hot pan with other ingredients like veges, mushrooms and glass noodles etc.

Bulgogi beef stew in Seoul, South Korea

Had this a few times in various spots in Seoul; the photo above was taken while dining out with some hostel friends near Sinseol-dong Station. Actually you can hardly find any place which cook this badly… the marination might be a bit time consuming but it’s basically a simple dish. Goes well with rice wine too lol.

    Dude,

    That’s not bulgogi.

That’s just some fried meat with onions.

Real Bulgogi is marinated meat grilled over a charcoal fire — hence the name. If you haven’t had it, then you haven’t had the real thing.

    Thanks for the note.

I amended the post… the dish is bulgogi stew (or bulgogi hot pot) to be precise. Most of the restaurants I went to have menus with pics, and I remember the waiters saying this as bulgogi all the time… guess I wasn’t listening the whole phrase (bulgogi xxx).

As for the ‘real’ bulgogi you mentioned, had that at a restaurant with English-speaking waiters. I was having ribs that time, they called it galbi right? So I didn’t link up bulgogi with BBQ… always thought that bulgogi is something like the pic above.

  3. abc says:

Yep. They may have just called it bulgogi. Unfortunately, there has been a tendency to have bulgogi mean thinly sliced, cooked marinated meat, but it’s not really.

The Galbi short ribs you had grilled over the fire is the way that the bulgogi should have been — unfortunately a lot of places just don’t want to put up with the hassle of delivering live coals to the tables. The best you can usually do is a gas grill.

The correct name is Bulgogi Jungol. It’s very popular in Korea. We eat this because it’s cheaper than the traditional bulgogi because there are more ingredients that make us full. We also eat this with rice.

  5. MaJieMao says:

you can eat the other with rice too I always did leaf, rice, hot sauce and Bulgogi.

  6. kyon says:

i thought this is bulgogi. the one abc mentioned we just bbq lol. what a big misunterstanding =p

  7. Yein Jee says:

abc… sometimes I wonder if the customers would prefer gas over charcoal too.

    Kim… thanks for the note.

Mao… Koreans can have rice with everything ain’t so? I learnt to eat instant noodles with rice during my stay lol.

kyon… that’s the problem; blame it on our local Korean restaurants :p
