AKB48 to setup theatre in Singapore

Japanese pop group AKB48 is setting up a theatre in Singapore, which would be their first regular show venue outside of Japan.

AKB48 Singapore theatre

The 48-members idol group made their debut as theatre based performers in 2005, and have since evolved into the most successful female pop group in Japan. AKB48 still perform on regular basis in their theatres despite the mainstream success. Their best selling singles include Sakura no Ki ni Narou and Beginner etc.

According to official announcement [Jp], the Singapore show will be held twice a month in 2011, beginning on May 15. The concert and ticketing details are not yet finalised. Judging from their previous well-received performances in Singapore, it’s probably going to be a sell out crowd, at least for the first few shows.

  1. they might regret this. as u said the first few shows should sell out, but i don’t think there’s so many akb48 fans in singapore to support 2 monthly show.

    • I’m wondering about that too. It’s an experiment obviously, and depends on their business arrangement… the local organiser might be facing the risk instead of AKB.

    • Well, I already learn that some are coming from china, hong kong, idonasia. It not singapore they are concenrate, its the fans from neighbor countries. Think even US and some eroupe will turn up if the front are showing up.

      • Yein Jee says:

Yeah, I have some Malaysian friends who are planning for a trip, and I can see some fans from other neighbouring countries doing so too.

It remains to be seen if the regional fanbase is huge enough to make it a regular show in long run though. I’m not really sure if AKB48 is THAT popular in this region.
