The Smurfs are celebrating their 50th birthday in 2008 with a year-long party across Europe.

Smurf

Belgian cartoonist Peyo introduced Smurfs (originally Les Schtroumpfs in French) to the world in a series of comic strips, making their first appearance in the Belgian comics-magazine Le Journal de Spirou on October 23, 1958.

English-speakers perhaps know them best through the 1980s animated television series from Hanna-Barbera Productions, The Smurfs.

Happy smurfing birthday.

Former American Idol contestant Kellie Pickler on TV show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” last week and stunned the audiences with some dumb moment.

She was asked: “Budapest is the capital of what European country?”

Video - Europe is a country and everyone speaks French???

Well, there is nothing wrong if we don’t know where is Budapest; my first guess was Romania and I got it wrong as well (the correct answer is Hungary)… Kellie’s responses beat me though.

Regardless, Kellie managed to raise at least US$25,000 for charity by appearing on the show… it doesn’t matter if she is dumb or not, she is probably doing better than most of us in contributing to the society. Thumbs up for that.
