Festival de Cannes, or Cannes Film Festival, is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious film festivals. The annual event is usually held in May at the Palais des Festivals in the resort town of Cannes in France.
The Festival International du Film was supposed to begin in Cannes in 1939, but was put off because of World War II.
The Festival de Cannes was finally eventually in 1946, the first great global cultural event of the post-war period.
The Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) was created in 1955 to replace the Grand Prix, the highest prize awarded to competing films.
The Cannes Film Festival marked its 62nd edition in 2009. Austrian film “The White Ribbon” (Das weiße Band) was chosen as the winner of the Palme d’Or.
