Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games opening

Photos from the opening of the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, on Friday night. The ceremony was held in an amphitheatre-like setting – facing the Pearl River with the Guangzhou TV Tower at sight – instead of the usual stadium-mode. Splendid stuff which could rival the Beijing Olympics. Image by Xinhuanet [Cn]…

  1. yupp, I watched it live on TV and my jaws just dropped. No other countries can beat China when it comes to opening ceremonies of any games. Can’t wait to watch the closing.

  2. Their budget for the event is probably beyond reasonable for the sake of pride and nationalism. There are not many countries that are willing to spend as much; and those that are financially capable might not have the creativity and technicality to do something like that.

Experience probably plays a part too… China has been running big events every couple of years since the Beijing Asian Games 20 years ago. Only America has similar level of experience.

  3. I think the only country that can compete with them like that is India and maybe they might become more impressive in the future, but probably not.
