The Pakatan Rakyat has just launched a campaign to boycott Utusan Malaysia and Mingguan Malaysia for their unfair reporting and racial sentiment.

It was a bizarre move by Pakatan… for all this while they are fighting for freedom of speech, and now they are, asking people to boycott the papers for their biasness. Such an irony.

I do read Utusan occasionally, and I know how pro-BN and racial biased they could be when reporting certain issues… but that doesn’t mean that they are liars.

Chinese papers are often bias when reporting some racial issues too… Hishammudin’s keris wielding for example was widely criticised in Chinese papers, while the Malay papers were more protective towards the same news.

Sometimes, there is no absolute answer to right or wrong in certain matters… it’s just about sharing different point of views, which is not really a bad thing for better understanding among Malaysians.

Besides, the blogosphere are more biased in favour of Pakatan than the mainstream media for BN… we are the worst when it comes to biasness. So, should BN supporters launch a boycott campaign against the bloggers in return?

So much so for freedom of speech.

I don’t blame him for that though; some Malaysians are immaturely abusing the freedom of speech… and considering his dent reputation among anti-BN supporters, his blog would be flooded with pointless verbal abuse, which probably deserves some moderation.

I hope that he won’t be stupid enough to block proper comments which share different point of views, and that he would share his real thoughts instead of making it solely for propaganda purpose.

Set the agendas and motives aside… it should be a welcome move to see political leaders expressing their thoughts directly to the public and to receive feedback. Give him a chance shall we?

Advertlets (advertlets.com), one of the two major online advertising networks in Malaysia, is facing a huge crisis… it seems like they have forgotten to renew their domain name.

Forgetting to renew a domain name is probably the lowest mistake any webmaster could make. It would be dumb enough if it is committed by an amateur webmaster; it was simply unthinkable for a supposedly ‘professional’ web based company to make this mistake.

Besides, websites that were running their ads were redirected to the domain registrar’s domain parking page… it simply means that Advertlets had bought down hundreds or thousands of websites that ran their ads.

(It’s advisable for Advertlets publishers to remove the Advertlets ad code at the moment until Advertlets could settle the issue)

Advertlets still have some time to renew their domain before it is being snapped by opportunists. Regardless, it is a huge mistake that seriously dampened their reputation (their reputation was already debatable to start with) and credibility.

If you do run a website… please remember to renew your domain name; make it a top priority. I would suggest webmasters to extend your domain ownership years in advance. This website domain (Yeinjee.com) for example… would not be expiring until 2017.

Update Jan 7 – Advertlets is back; their boss Josh Lim has apologised and explained about what has happened (not much details though).

Three police reports were lodged against blogger Jeff Ooi for allegedly defaming the country, government and police force.

The reports were lodged by the Malaysian Islamic Consumers Association, Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress and Pertubuhan Seni Silat Ikatan Kalam Malaysia against a statement issued by Ooi to an Al Jazeera reporter. The statement was allegedly broadcast on YouTube following an illegal gathering on Nov 10 organised by a coalition of opposition parties and non-governmental organisations calling itself Bersih.

The police reports were lodged at the Sentul police headquarters yesterday about 4.30pm.

The complainants want Ooi to be investigated, alleging that the interview given to Al Jazeera not only tarnished the image of the country but was also seditious and caused racial tension.

Ooi is also alleged to have given inaccurate information to Al Jazeera in stating that the police used unnecessary force in dispersing the demonstrators.

A businessman has lodged a police report against web portal Malaysia Today and its owner Raja Petra Kamaruddin for an article in the site which he alleged could cause disunity.

Noor Hisham Yusoh, 33, lodged the report at the Brickfields police station at about 7.30pm yesterday accompanied by seven other friends urging the authorities to carry out investigations into the article.

He said the article headlined “What the eye does not see” by Raja Petra had elements of instigation.

“As a Malaysian citizen, I think that his accusations are serious and can convince a lot of people in Malaysia that the country is not peaceful anymore,” he said, adding that the article could make the situation worse.

Noor Hisham from Bukit Subang said he decided to lodge the report after having a discussion with his friends who agreed that the article could cause disunity in the country.

“We are living in a very prosperous country and we do not want such an article to cause any problem,” he said.

Prominent blogger Jeff Ooi has joined DAP, officially.

I respect Jeff Ooi for pioneering the socio-political blogging in Malaysia, but frankly I am not a big fan of him… I have doubts about his character and political correctness sometimes.

Politics101 has branded Jeff’s joining as “probably the biggest catch in living memory’ for DAP, and that it is ‘is a historic day for the country”… I don’t think so.

Jeff Ooi might be famous to bloggers, but for those who don’t blog or rarely read news online… they don’t know Jeff Ooi. If I ask my friends about Jeff Ooi, chances are 9 out of 10 won’t know who the heck he is.

You may argue that those friends of mine have been living in caves, but fact is there are lots and lots of Malaysians like them that never bother much about happenings online.

Besides, the high profile ‘welcoming’ of Jeff Ooi is set to backfire in certain way… I have friends that work for DAP for years and I don’t think they ever received the attention that Jeff Ooi is having at the moment… I am not sure if everyone in DAP would be that generous and welcome Jeff with open arms like Lim Kit Siang did.

If Jeff Ooi wants to become a successful politician, he needs to jump out of the NET and do more ground work to spread his ideology. He needs to expand his circle of influence… and starting a new blog won’t help much, as it would be the same group of people from his current blog that are going to read it.

Malaysia-today.net is blocked by Malaysia government???

After a controversial police report by Mat Taib against Raja Petra Kamarudin (RPK), the webmaster of Malaysia Today (MT) on July 23, it seems like the government has up their ante in the battle against MT by blocking the accessibility of the website from Malaysian IPs.

I couldn’t access the website earlier on, and I thought that the website might be overloaded server or something… but I just realized that MT might be blocked by Malaysia ISP instead (Hat tip to Shadowfox and Kai).

I tried accessing MT from an anonymizer, and the site is working just fine. You can access MT using proxies – find one from this link.

The censoring is not 100% proven yet, as some people are not able to access MT with proxy as well [Hafiz]… but it is likely that the ban is on.

I am not a regular reader of MT so I guess I won’t be much affected, but I will be really disappointed if the government decided to impose internet censorship against their critics. It will be another blow to MSC’s Bill of Guarantees for ensuring no Internet censorship, and more importantly… it shows that Malaysia government is not ready to handle criticism.

Besides, it is easy to find another route to access the website; does government really think they can just shut down a website like that? This kind of cheap act will likely to create more retaliation against them instead… not the smartest move.

Update – MT is back online on 11pm… I guess I was a bit paranoia. I am not sure what was happening; I am guessing that RPK was migrating MT to a new server, and the DNS was resolved in a different pace with various ISP.

My apology regardless.

Update July 29 – MT’s explanation on the downtime
