Girls’ Generation is arguably South Korea’s most popular pop group, with hit songs like Gee, Genie, Oh, Hoot, and The Boys etc. The group is often referred to as Soshi, or SNSD – abbreviations of their Korean name So Nyeo Shi Dae (소녀시대).
The nine members of Girls’ Generation are Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun. Check out SNSD members’ profiles.
SNSD made their official debut in August 2007 with single Into the New World. They released their first (self-titled) full album in November, with its second track Kissing You a hit. The album was repackaged as Baby Baby in March 2008. The girls also worked in various (solo) projects, e.g. in reality shows, TV dramas and radio shows etc.
SNSD released their first mini-album, Gee, in January 2009, which became a mega hit, with its title track breaking various #1 records on music charts. They released their second mini-album, Tell Me Your Wish in June, which was hugely successful as well.
SNSD continued to excel in 2010 with their second full length album Oh in January, followed by repackaged album RunDevilRun in March, and their third mini-album Hoot in October. The group also made their official Japanese debut in September, with single Genie reaching the #4 spot on Oricon weekly chart.
SNSD released their first original Japanese single, Mr Taxi, in April 2011; followed by their first (self-titled) full-length Japanese album in June which reached the top of Oricon weekly album-sales chart. The girls made their Korean comeback in October with their third full length album, The Boys, which became the year’s best selling album.
The group’s first official subunit, Girls’ Generation-TTS, was formed in May 2012 with debut Korean mini-album Twinkle. SNSD released a few other Japanese singles, i.e. Paparazzi in June, a remake of Oh in September, and Flower Power in November before releasing their second Japanese studio album Girls & Peace later that month.
Girls’ Generation released their fourth Korean studio album, I Got A Boy, in January 2013. They released a Japanese compilation album, Best Selection Non Stop Mix, in March; followed by a new Japanese single Love & Girls in May.
