A Separation – Oscar Best Foreign Film

Iranian movie A Separation has won the 2012 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film – the first middle-eastern picture to claim the honour…

The movie tells the story of a middle-class couple who’s heading for divorce, but things got complicated when the husband is accused of causing the miscarriage of their lower-class maid hired to take care of his Alzheimer-suffering father.

The film raised questions on lots of social issues… taking care of elders, marriage & kids, social class, religion & sins, mental illness, distortions etc. The interesting thing is that it managed to squeeze all the issues smoothly in the storyline, with some clever twists.

Iran claims London Olympics logo spells Zion

London 2012 Olympics logoIran has threatened to boycott the London Olympics unless the organisers replace the official logo, which Tehran claims spells out Zion – a word often used as a synonym for Jerusalem and the Biblical land of Israel.

The logo, a jagged representation of the year 2012, has been criticised to resemble many things, from a swastika to a sexual act, but the Iranian government argues it represents a veiled pro-Israeli conspiracy.

I wonder what took the Iranian government that long to file a complain, as the Zion rumour had surfaced not long after the logo was unveiled in 2007. The resemblance becomes more apparent when the logo is spread out…

Not that I agree with Iran or anything, it looks more like a coincident instead of conspiracy. I can understand though, that some Arabic nations could be a bit sensitive with this considering their strained relationship with Israel.
