Music video for “Tone of Everyday” (日々の音色; Hibi no Neiro) by Japanese band Sour from their first mini album “Water Flavor EP”.

The song is just ok, but the MV super cool. The cast were selected from actual Sour fan base around the world; and each person and scene was filmed purely via webcam and stitched together to make the awesome video…

Morning Musume’s original promotion video contest

Japanese pop group Morning Musume is collaborating with Myspace for an OPV contest where the public is invited to create a promotion (music) video for “3, 2, 1 Breakin’ Out”, coupling song for the girls’ 39th and latest single.

The contest is opened to everyone regardless of age, sex, nationality; the winner will receive 390,000 yen (~USD4k) and some other bonuses. Relevant clips and audio is provided; expiry date June 19. Check out Myspace for more details.

Chinese singer alan creates record at Japanese chart

Chinese-Tibetan artist Alan Dawa Dolma (known as alan in Japan) became the first singer from China to top the Japanese Oricon sales chart, albeit for just a day on April 13th, with her 9th Japanese single “River of Eternity”.

The title track is the theme song for Chinese movie “Red Cliff 2″, premiered in Japan on April 10th. Official music video below…

The single peaked at 3rd spot on Oricon weekly chart, also a new record for mainland Chinese artist, previously held by Faye Wong (9th spot) with “Eyes on Me” in 1999.

Anime Expo brings Morning Musume to LA

Japanese pop group Morning Musume is going to perform at the Anime Expo (AX), America’s largest anime convention that will be held on July 2-5, 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

J-pop fans in the region should be pretty excited about the news despite the fact that Morning Musume’s popularity has been fading a bit in recent years… the all-girls group is an icon synonymous to Japanese pop culture after all.

Some self-proclaimed hardcore anime fans might not be too happy though; I’ve known a few people that don’t fancy pop stars intruding anime/manga conventions, especially those whose previous works are totally not related to anime culture.

The idea is not new; American stars Matchbox 20 and Jennifer Lopez have done this before. Ayu is probably the first popular Japanese singer to try this though… I guess she is stamping her mark as the trendsetter at the land of the rising sun yet again.

Chage & Aska announced indefinite hiatus

Popular Japanese pop duo Chage & Aska announced that they are going on indefinite hiatus (as a pair) and will focus on their solo career instead. The duo denied that they are formally disbanded as rumoured, but their fans might not be seeing their joint performance for a long long time.

The veteran duo made their debut in 1979 and were extremely popular in the 80s and early 90s; they were one of the earliest J-pop acts which got my attention. Sharing a Chage & Aska’s song below, “Otoko to Onna” (lit. Men and Women) which was popularly covered by Chinese singer Wakin Chau…
