The company has a good reputation but faces stiff competition from budget airline AirAsia in recent years. MAS provides better service in most aspects, but the later is cheaper by a huge margin. It’s an easy decision for many travellers as money usually comes first.
Low-cost carrier is nothing new, it’s pretty common in the United States since the 70’s. The business model started to work in Europe in the 90’s, and Asia finally caught up with the trend in the past decade.
Conventional airlines like MAS will have to adapt to the challenge. Cost cutting and price revision are inevitable; and I hope they find the right balance between pricing and service quality.
