Sultan Azlan Shah, former Yang di-Pertuan Agong (head of state of Malaysia), the Sultan of Perak, the state I was born, has passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86.
The Sultan wasn’t the de-facto successor to the throne. He was a lawyer, later a prosecutor, a judge, and the Lord President of the Federal Court of Malaysia.
He became the Sultan in 1984, after a string of unexpected events. To cut short, if his successor, Sultan Idris Shah II, died a few months earlier, he won’t be the Sultan.
His wife became the first ever commoner Queen in the history of Malaysia when he became the King in 1989-1994 (in a unique elective monarchy system).
He was also a patron for a few educational institutions, including as Chancellor of the University of Malaya, where I graduated from. It’s regrettable that I couldn’t receive my scroll directly from the man; he usually attended only the first day of the ceremony.
He was a state hockey player and contributed to the growth of the game, both domestically and internationally. And he’s also famous for his good looks =)
He will be missed. Al-Fatihah, rest in peace.
Trailer for Japanese movie Gift, starring Kenichi Endo and Rena Matsui. The later plays a bar hostess who’s running away from a secret past, then she met with a bad-tempered but successful businessman who proposed to pay her 100 million yen (~one million USD) for 100 hours of her time (it’s not as kinki as it may sound).
Endo is a veteran who has starred in many dramas and films, mostly as supportive cast AFAIK. Meanwhile, this is the first leading role in a feature film for Matsui, who’s a member of SKE48, one of the girl groups under the popular AKB48 franchise.
Japanese model Yuri Ebihara in a recent commercial for cosmetics brand Benefique. Seems like a new range of products that offer sauna-like benefits to the skin.
Shiseido, a 140-year-old cosmetics company
Benefique is a sub-brand of Japanese cosmetics giant Shiseido. Founded in 1872, Shiseido is one of the oldest (and largest) personal care companies in the world.
In Japan, Benefique is a sub-brand focuses on pre-makeup and foundation products. Maquillage is the sub-brand which features full-line makeup products instead.
Ebihara has been endorsing various Shiseido brands for years. Beside Benefique and Maquillage, she had appeared in advertisements for Anessa sunscreen line too.
