Video of Japanese voice actress Aya Hirano performing God Knows at a special gig for popular anime series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
The Anime
Hirano voiced the titular character in the anime series in 2006. It’s a story about high school kids with a supernatural theme. It’s a really big hit in and out of Japan.
There’s a scene in the show with Haruhi performing the song live at her school festival…
Her vocal is quite weak to be frank, but kudos for singing it live instead of lip-sync.
Hat tip to Smushed and NicoRockH for the uploads.
A decade later
Some updates in December 2017.
Unlike many Japanese videos, the two clips are still watchable on YouTube for a decade. So, thanks to the parties involved for showing common sense instead of overzealous with copyrights stuff.
Beside its original manga (ended in 2013) and anime series, the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise has expand into movie, games and various spin-offs. Its legacy will last a long while.
Aya Hirano is still working as a voice actress and has released a few singles and albums too. She’s reasonably popular these days but her career was hindered by a pituitary gland tumour.
The tumour can cause temporary memory loss, loss of vision and slurring of speech. She has the problem since high school and seems like it’s really causing trouble since 2011. Wish her all the best.
