Hollywood stars Gal Gadot and Jason Statham work together in a Super Bowl commercial for Wix, a popular website builder and hosting platform. Cool video, but has little to do with the business…
Gadot is the it girl after starring as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice last year. Her stock is going to rise further with the solo Wonder Woman movie this summer.
Statham is an established action star who has his fans and critics. His career reaches new height following his villainous role in the Fast & Furious franchise. Gadot starred in the film series too but the two never appeared together as Gadot’s character is dead before Statham made his mark.
Wix is an Israeli company, so it’s fitting to feature Gadot, an Israeli, in the advert. Not sure if they did that on purpose though, Gadot is the lady-of-the-moment after all. Statham is a British BTW.
The Super Bowl (and American football in general) is one of the biggest annual events in the United States but has very little influence outside the region. Advertisers pay millions of dollars for a 30-second spot during the broadcast; many brands also introduce special campaigns for the Big Game if they can’t secure a slot. The “Super Bowl marketing” has become a popular thing on its own.
I’m surprised that Wix is capable of paying for that though, on top of the fees for the actors which are definitely not cheap as well. I know Wix’s service is popular but never realised that it’s so profitable.
Update – Director’s Cut
Check out the director’s cut, which includes the above video plus its sequel. Apparently the ads try to convey a message that building a website is easy with Wix in this disruptive world.
Also, Wix is listed on NASDAQ with a market value of around two billion US dollars. That’s despite the fact that the company has never made any meaningful profit in the past few years. Well, that’s how internet business works these days. It’s surely a disruptive, if not crazy, kind of world.
