Terra Nova TV series trailer

November 23, 2011 by Yein Jee

Terra Nova is an American science fiction drama TV series currently showing on Fox Network. The story follows selected groups of people who flee the dystopian future to start a colony in a parallel world that resembles Earth’s Cretaceous Period, which was 85 million years ago with dinosaurs and stuff.

Terra Nova is touted as one of the most expensive TV series ever made. It’s co-produced by Steven Spielberg, who’s also the co-creator of the Jurassic Park franchise in the 1990s. There’s a lot of hype for the show because of these reasons. Check out the trailer (Brazilian version)…

The main cast of Terra Nova includes Jason O’Mara, Shelley Conn, Christine Adams, Allison Miller, Landon Liboiron, Naomi Scott, Mido Hamada, Alana Mansour, Stephen Lang and Rod Hallett. They shot the series in Australia, and the show also features many local actors in minor roles.

Hawaii Five-0

November 29, 2010 by Yein Jee

Sneak peak (premier episode) for the 2010 version of American TV series Hawaii Five-0. The crime-action drama has just started showing at my place earlier this month; should be at least a few episodes ahead in the US & Canada…

The only thing I remember from the original Hawaii Five-O is the epic theme song; and it’s quite an old series so there’s no point comparing both. There are hits and misses with the 2010 show… Hawaii looks great, action is decent, but the script (the dialogues in particular) is poor, and the cast is doing just ok.

The Asian actors caught my interest at first; after all it’s not often to see Asians taking half a portion of the main cast (i.e. Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim & Grace Park) in a US drama series. Grace Park took me to the second episode, and even she could do nothing as I halted before the third.

K-Town Asian American reality TV show

August 18, 2010 by Yein Jee

K-Town is an American reality show about the lives of some young Asian Americans living in Los Angeles’s Koreatown. Some previews suggested that it’s an Asian version of Jersey Shore, which I have no clue what it is. From the promo stills it’s not difficult to guess that it’s going to be fleshy though…

Maggie Q starring as Nikita

June 13, 2010 by Yein Jee

Actress Maggie Q is playing the title role in American action thriller TV series Nikita. Her co-stars includes Shane West, Lyndsy Fonseca, Aaron Stanford, Ashton Holmes, Tiffany Hines, Melinda Clarke and Xander Berkeley. The show will start airing on The CW network in the US in September.

Nikita is an assassin who escaped from a secret government organisation, and she’s back to bring down the organisation after three years in hiding. The extended trailer explains everything…

This is the second American TV adaptation of the 1990 French film Nikita by Luc Besson. It was also adapted as La Femme Nikita in 1997-2001. The two series have no direct connection, and the plot seems different too – Nikita works with the agency in the old one but went rogue in the new show.

Brief intro of Maggie Q

Maggie Q was born and raised in Hawaii. Her mother is a Vietnamese immigrant, and her father an American of Irish and Polish descent. Her real name is Margaret Denise Quigley; I think she began using her stage name when acting in Hong Kong, it’s easier for the Asians to remember that.

Maggie made her name as an actress in Hong Kong in early 2000s. Many people probably don’t know that she actually started her career as a model in Japan instead. She became known back in the US after appearing in Hollywood hits Mission Impossible III (2006) and Die Hard 4.0 (2007).

It’s good to see an Asian face taking THE leading role in an American series because it doesn’t happen often. And the show seems like a perfect fit for Maggie, she looks great in the trailer.

NCIS fanmade trailer

January 21, 2008 by Yein Jee

NCIS is an American TV series about a fictional team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. The main cast includes Mark Harmon, Sasha Alexander (season 1-2), Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette, David McCallum, Sean Murray, Cote de Pablo and Lauren Holly.

The fifth season is currently showing on CBS in America. This fanmade video is sort of a recap for the first four seasons, and it’s better than many official trailers. Well done =)

I didn’t pick up NCIS at first. Binge-watched the series during a recent rerun because of friend’s recommendation, and it appears to be a decent show. The first two seasons are a bit cheesy with the rookie plot, but it became better and more dramatic later on.

Was a bit sad when they killed off Kate (Sasha Alexander) at the end of season two. It’s a great episode though, and it redefined the series into a more serious tone. The surprise twist also garnered public interest – viewership increased in the following season and it’s becoming a popular show.

I’ll have to wait a while for my local network to pick up the latest season. It’s usually after the end of the original broadcast in the United States. I don’t mind the wait, not the type who have to watch a show on first minute basis. I actually prefer to binge-watch a show if it’s an option.

Update 2018 – A decade later

NCIS became one of my all time favourite TV series. Extra props for its longevity, I usually stopped watching a show after three to four seasons but stayed for quite a while with this one.

I stopped following the series regularly after season 11 though – not long after Cote de Pablo (Ziva David) left the show. I did binge-watched season 12-13 later on Netflix, but then Michael Weatherly (Anthony DiNozzo) left too, and it really signals the end of my personal interest.

NCIS remains one of the most popular series in the US. And it’s still my most-watched American TV shows. There are not many series that last this long to begin with (since 2003). And as mentioned above, I usually gave up on a show after just a few seasons when it became dull. So, kudos for breaking the mold.

The only other show that I watched for more than 10 seasons is The Big Bang Theory, which is in its 11th season at the time of this update. I did miss quite a number of episodes with TBBT though; on contrary I’ve watched almost everything on NCIS up to the 13th season (2015-2016).
