Jeon Do-yeon won best actress in Cannes

May 28, 2007 by Yein Jee

Jeon Do-yeon became the first Korean recipient of the best actress award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for her role in Secret Sunshine.

Jeon played Sin-ae, a widow who moved with her son to a small town named Milyang (lit. Secret Sunshine) to begin her new life, but was struck by yet another tragedy. As the lady struggled to face the series of unfortunate events, a man (played by Song Kang-ho) stepped in and tried to offer her new hope in life.

Korean movies are gradually being recognised around the world; and this award could be a breakthrough for the Korean film industry. Congrats to the actress, people who worked behind the film, and to all Korean film makers in general.

Digi will follow you everywhere in Malaysia

May 13, 2007 by Yein Jee

Malaysian commercial for mobile service provider Digi, featuring the company’s now famous Yellow Man mascot. The song is a remake of I Will Follow Him, an oldie made famous by Peggy March in 1960’s.

Digi is one of the major telecommunication companies in Malaysia. Its largest shareholder is Norwegian telco giant Telenor, and that creates a huge disadvantage because Malaysian government doesn’t always play fair in business decisions in order to protect the “local” companies.

Thus, Digi always have to be extra innovative to compete with the rest; and the Yellow Man is one of its major successes. This particular ad aired late last year, can’t remember when the Yellow Man first appeared though. Regardless, the campaigns help a lot to keep Digi’s competitiveness in the market.

Hooter Girls in Seoul

May 7, 2007 by Yein Jee

Video of “Hooter Girls” in Seoul. The Hooters is an American restaurant chain famous for hiring attractive young women as staff. The Koreans are probably a bit too conservative for this, guess the main customers are mostly expats.

Cool fountain clock at Kanazawa Station

May 5, 2007 by Yein Jee

A cool fountain-clock at the main railway station in Kanazawa, Japan. Contrary to most electronic or mechanical clocks in public areas, the fountain uses (computer programs and) little water jets to display its contexts instead. The words at the beginning of the video means Kanazawa Station.

Kanazawa is a city in north-western Ishikawa Prefecture. It’s famous for its traditional handicrafts, and it’s also a major tourist attraction among Japanese. The region is relatively unknown to foreigners though.

Visit Malaysia Year 2007 promotion videos

May 2, 2007 by Yein Jee

Malaysia is celebrating 50 years of independence in 2007, and the government has designated this as a Visit Malaysia Year. Check out the promotion video for this special occasion.

I don’t always boost about things from my country but I think we have some pretty amazing tourism campaigns. The Malaysia Truly Asia slogan is also a classic, albeit a controversial one. A few of our neighbours are not that happy with the tagline, but I’ll leave the long story for another day.
