Old Chinese banknote auctioned for $345,000

December 22, 2010 by Yein Jee

China banknote auctioned for millionsAn old Chinese banknote was sold for ¥2.35million (~$345,000 USD) at an action in Shanghai on Dec 20.

Nicknamed the “horse ranching pic” for its background image, the banknote was the first batch of Renminbi issued by the People’s Bank of China in 1951.

The banknote had a face value of 10000 when issued, but the currency was revalued shortly after and 10000 became ¥1 instead. Image via Artron [Cn], click pic for bigger size.

Driving the wrong way on the freeway in China

December 9, 2010 by Yein Jee

Asian-American actress Kelly Hu is having a trip in China, and while travelling from Beijing to Tianjin, boarded a cab and enjoyed a journey of a lifetime…

Quoted from Kelly… our driver realized he was lost and instead of getting off at the next exit and turning around, he decided to make a u-turn in the middle of the freeway and proceeded to travel in the opposite direction of the traffic! Apparently this is not uncommon in China, especially in Tianjin.

It’s not something exclusive to China though. I have had plenty of this during my Bromo trip (Indonesia) last year; and this could be seen occasionally on Malaysian highways too, especially in rural areas. Hmmm, welcome to Asia.
