Pacific Rim movie trailer

May 3, 2013 by Yein Jee

Nice trailer for Hollywood film Pacific Rim, a giant robot vs monster movie (heavily inspired by the Japanese mecha anime/manga genre) by filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. In theatres July 12, 2013.

World War Z movie trailer

December 9, 2012 by Yein Jee

Trailer for World War Z, an American zombie movie starring Brad Pitt and Mireille Enos etc. Directed by Marc Forster and based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Max Brooks. In cinemas next June.

Pitt stars as a former United Nations investigator who must travel the world to find a way to stop a zombie pandemic. From the teaser seems like he has to get his family out of trouble first.

Zombie apocalypse is a possible thing in real life, all we need is a mutated rabies virus to start an outbreak. The infected may behave in many ways like a zombie, but it make no biological sense that zombies can become superhuman. And thus, I don’t really buy into this fast zombie stuff.

The trailer looks pretty intense though; and I’m a fan of disaster films, so I’ll be watching it regardless.

Update and verdict

The drama, suspense and acting are all pretty good.

There are criticisms about the anti-climax ending but I actually like that part. Not all action movies have to end with a bang; it’s good to be serene sometimes, especially when it’s done right.

Haeundae (2009) Korean movie trailer

June 24, 2009 by Yein Jee

English subbed teaser for Korean movie Haeundae which is billed as South Korea’s first major disaster film, starring Sol Kyung-gu, Ha Ji-won, Park Jung-hoon and Uhm Jung-hwa etc. Coming to Korean cinemas in July 2009.

Haeundae is a popular beach district in Busan; and the movie is about a giant tsunami that struck the coast. The trailer doesn’t look half bad; and being a disaster movie freak, I’m definitely going to watch it when it’s released in local theatres.

[Update 2010] The movie received mixed reviews (I think it’s fair) but was nonetheless a local box office hit. It’s re-titled as Tidal Wave in some countries.

Sinking of Japan (2006) movie review

May 7, 2007 by Yein Jee

Sinking of Japan (日本沈没, Nihon Chinbotsu ) is a 2006 Japanese disaster movie directed by Shinji Higuchi. It’s a remake of a 1973 film which itself was an adaptation of a novel by Sakyo Komatsu. Both movies and the novel have different English titles but it’s the same in Japanese.

The 2006 film starred Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, Kou Shibasaki, Etsushi Toyokawa, Mao Daichi and Mitsuhiro Oikawa etc. More details on cast and crew at end of the post.

Japanese movie Sinking of Japan

The story is about Japan “sinking” into the sea because of tectonic plate motions. And time is running out for the Japanese people as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis begin to devour the country.
