Not a zombie fan but The Walking Dead is good stuff

October 7, 2012 by Yein Jee

The Walking Dead, an American zombie apocalypse TV series, seems to be a craze lately. Its third season is coming soon and my local channel did a marathon run for the first two seasons; I’m not a fan of zombie shows but decided to give it a go regardless, and it was surprisingly good.

The main character is deputy sheriff Rick Grimes (starring Andrew Lincoln) who leads a group of survivors in Georgia after a worldwide apocalypse. They have to fight against not just the zombies – known as walkers in the series – but other survivors too, including threats from within the group.

Video below is a nice summary of the first season by IGN. The second season features similar (albeit darker) theme… with more people, relationships and also larger herd of zombies.

It’s not the first zombie show to dwell on humanity side in an apocalypse, but it’s probably the first to tell the stories in such depth. The series also struck a nice balance between human drama and horror plot; it could become a boring show if they focused too much on either part but they got that right.

Korean American actor Steven Yeun stars as the smarty of the group; that’s racial stereotype right there but good to see an Asian in a popular series regardless. The cast also includes Jon Bernthal, Sarah Wayne Callies, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn, Chandler Riggs, Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride.

A few of the new faces in season two e.g. Lauren Cohan and Scott Wilson will probably be credited as the main cast in the new season, which will start airing on October 14 in the United States.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey trailer

October 4, 2012 by Yein Jee

Official trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It’s the first of a three film series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel The Hobbit. The other two are The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies, and together they act as a prequel to the epic Lord of The Rings (LOTR) film trilogy.

The cast of An Unexpected Journey includes Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt, Ken Stott, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood and Andy Serkis. Peter Jackson directed all the movies in the two trilogies; and a few actors also star in both series.

Marvel Avengers Assemble movie trailer

March 7, 2012 by Yein Jee

Trailer for Avengers Assemble (or The Avengers, depends on where you live), a Hollywood scifi-action flick starring a bunch of superheroes, and Scarlett Johansson…

To be frank I’m not familiar with Marvel’s comics, and this is the first time I’ve read of the Avengers (and realising that all these superfolks are actually connected). Seems like an interesting movie regardless. Coming soon in April (UK) or May (US).

Avatar (2009) movie trailer

January 27, 2010 by Yein Jee

Trailer for 3D movie Avatar, officially the all-time highest-grossing film worldwide (over two billion USD), beating the previous record of Titanic. Amazingly both films were directed by the same man, James Cameron…

Haven’t watched the movie yet, perhaps I should catch it while I’m in Seoul for a different kind of cinematic experience. The trailer doesn’t excite me to be honest, it’s all about the 3D hype… without that it’s probably just another average sci-fi action film.

Michael Jackson (1958-2009)

June 26, 2009 by Yein Jee

Pop legend Michael Jackson died on Thursday. He collapsed at his home in LA and pronounced dead at 2:26 pm local time. He died of cardiac arrest, with suspicion of overdosed on his prescription in some news reports.

I grew up listening to his songs, and despite all the controversies surrounding his life, Michael will always be the King of Pop in my heart… he will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace Michael.
