Indonesia AirAsia flight crashed into sea

December 29, 2014 by Yein Jee

Most of you should have read the news by now, that Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501 (QZ8501/AWQ8501) had crashed into the Java sea on December 28, with 155 passengers and seven crew on board. [Update] No survivors.

2014 is a terribly sad year for Asian aviation. Malaysia Airlines MH370 is still missing, presumably in the Indian Ocean; MH17 shot down in Ukraine; there’s also TransAsia Airways Flight 222 that crashed into buildings in Taiwan; and now this.

My deepest condolences to the families, may the victims rest in peace.

16 dead in Korean outdoor concert mishap

October 17, 2014 by Yein Jee

At least 16 spectators died and 10 seriously injured in a mishap at an outdoor concert in Seongnam, Korea, on October 17, 2014. The victims fell 20 metres into an underground parking area when the ventilation grates (which they were not supposed to stand on) gave way under their weight. Image by TheFact [Kr].

Malaysia Airlines MH17 crashes in Ukraine

July 17, 2014 by Yein Jee

A Malaysia Airlines passenger plane crashes in Ukraine, near Russian border, on Thursday, killing all 298 people aboard, mostly Dutch. It’s believed that the plane was shot down by pro-Russian separatist.

It’s a sad and shocking tragedy. Condolences to the families, and may the victims rest in peace.

I’m afraid there will be no justice though, if the Russians were really behind this. They are going to deny or ignore the matter and walk free with blood on their hands. The countries at stake don’t have the power to touch them, and the rest of the world will offer very little support against them.

The aviation industry needs to reflect on this too. Hundreds of commercial airlines flew over the conflicted region in the prior week before the MH17 crash. Not sure why they deemed the route safe – or perhaps they never thought about the situation at all – but it’s obviously a wrong judgement.

This is the second disaster involving Malaysia Airlines this year. Flight MH370 disappeared in March; it’s still missing and presumably crashed in the Indian Ocean with 239 people on board.

South Korea ferry disaster

April 16, 2014 by Yein Jee

Hundreds of people are missing after a ferry capsized and sank in South Korea.

The ship sent a distress signal around 9am KST, April 16, and sank in two hours.

There’re conflicting numbers, four confirmed dead, 260-290 people unaccounted for.

My thought goes to the victims and families. Hope there’re some miracles.

MH370 crashed in the Indian Ocean

March 25, 2014 by Yein Jee

Condolences to the families of the passengers and crew of Flight MH370.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia announced late Monday that the plane, missing since March 8, had crashed in the southern Indian Ocean. The conclusion came via data and analysis from satellite firm Inmarsat and UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

The Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared on March 8 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. It went off course from the flight plan about 40 minutes after takeoff and flew westward instead. It disappeared from the radar later on; if it had kept its final path it would had crashed in the Indian Ocean.

There are still many questions, but no one can give any conclusive answer until we find the missing aircraft. Hope that day comes soon to provide proper closure for the victims and the families.
