Fabio Cannavaro Japanese samurai tattoo

September 14, 2014 by Yein Jee

A little throwback, Italian soccer star Fabio Cannavaro on the cover of Vanity Fair Italia [It] in May 2006. What caught my eye is the Japanese samurai warrior tattoo, which actually looks cute and a contrast to his muscular body.

Speaking of 2006, Cannavaro captained the Italian national team that won the World Cup in Germany a few months after the magazine is published. He was later named as FIFA World Player of The Year and also won the Ballon d’Or.

A compilation of the roaring engine sound of Ferrari F1s from different eras, from the V6 turbo to the V10, V12 up to the most recent V8. Video by Marchettino, an Italian “petrolhead”. Quite an awesome clip if you are a racing fan.

Scientists jailed for earthquake

October 23, 2012 by Yein Jee

L Aquila ItalySix Italian scientists and an ex-government official have been sentenced to six years in prison (for multiple manslaughter) over the 2009 earthquake in L’Aquila which killed 309 people.

The verdict was made not because of the failure to predict the quake (which we know is quite impossible), but the “over-assurance” that misled the victims that it’s safe despite some hints.

But what else should the scientists tell the people?

With this verdict the only call scientists can make in future is to evacuate every time there’s a small tremor, which probably means that most part of Italy is not habitable.

The scientists made the wrong decision for L’Aquila, unfortunately. But they didn’t have much option besides giving the “false assurance”.

Diesel – Fit Your Attitude preview film

September 14, 2012 by Yein Jee

Preview video for Italian clothing brand Diesel’s Denim FW12 collection. The featured models are Kasia Smutniak, Poppy Delevingne, Coco Rocha, Tali Lennox, and Theodora Richards.

There are many YouTube comments (not in a good way) about how skinny the models are. I felt the same way too when I was younger, but these days I think that as long as people are healthy it doesn’t matter if they look too thin or fat. As long as they are healthy though, let me stress that again.

Besides, Diesel obviously doesn’t mind using “skinny” as a selling point, that’s probably why the models are on the slim side. Would be interesting if they use plus size models and make them look skinnier than usual instead; if the jeans are good enough to do that (which I doubt), the sales will soar for sure.

I presume they shot this in New York. I know it’s an iconic city but NYC features as backdrop way too often in these fashion films. How about Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur or Cape Town for a change?
