Taylor Swift Asia Tour

February 25, 2011 by Yein Jee

American country-pop singer Taylor Swift has posted a video [YT] of her recent Asia Tour (mostly offbeat stuff, including a geisha makeover), which includes stops in Singapore, Seoul, Osaka, Tokyo, Manila and Hong Kong…

Btw, the ‘cat’ is called fortune beckoning cat (招财猫, literally) in Chinese. It’s originated from Japan but seems more popular in Chinese culture these days.

Manila bus massacre

August 24, 2010 by Yein Jee

Eight Hong Kong tourists were killed in a bus hijack in Manila, Philippines, on Monday. My condolences to their families, and may the victims RIP.

The police force is under heavy criticism for their mismanagement during the incident; and the Filipino president is a PR disaster with his wickedly smiley face during a post-mortem press conference defending the cops while blaming the media for the live broadcast instead (which is partially a valid point).

The timeline of the incident becomes more apparent this afternoon following survivors’ account and new reports. I’m no SWAT or specialist, but there are a few obvious mistakes that could have turned the event around…

1. The sniper had multiple chance to take down the gunman. I know there are protocols that shots would not be fired when negotiation was undergoing nicely, technically it’s probably not a wrong call, but it appears a huge mistake now.

Santa cops are back in Manila

December 3, 2008 by Yein Jee

Manila metro police yesterday (Dec 2) launched its Santa Cops program where some 200 police officers would be wearing the Santa Claus hat while on duty (until Jan 2).

The Santa cops will be deployed in malls, markets, and busy public areas in the capital city of the Philippines to maintain peace during the festive season.

The concept was introduced a few years ago to portray a friendly image and to bring the cops closer to the public. The idea is probably well received by the Manila people considering the fact that the metro police is making it an annual routine.
