Malaysia Covid-19 lockdown – Thank you, stay safe, good luck

March 16, 2020 by Yein Jee

Malaysia will be in lockdown from March 18 to March 31, 2020, to deal with the Covid-19 situation. Officially it’s a Movement Control Order (MCO) but it’s effectively a lockdown like some other countries. Malaysians can read the details on local news so I am not getting into that.

Instead, I want to thank the medical staff – including some friends – and other folks who work hard to combat the pandemic around the world. Also thanks to those who will keep the country running during the lockdown. It is not a choice in some cases but a heartfelt appreciation nonetheless.

I hope everyone will be disciplined and thoughtful during the period. Restrict our travel as much as possible and follow the orders. Most of us have people we care who are vulnerable, and frankly nobody is really safe from the virus. Let’s make a collective effort to curb the spread.

There are people who will be more affected, mentally and financially etc. Hopefully the government can provide proper assistance. I will donate a bit to help those in need. Kindly contribute in your own ways if you are capable to do so. The options should become clearer after a few days.

So, thank you, stay safe and good luck. Malaysians, everyone, everywhere.

Update – The MCO has been extended at least until April 14, not going to update about this anymore. The situation around the world also worsen since I first posted the thoughts. My condolences, may the souls rest in peace. Others, stay strong, keep on fighting, and best wishes.

Nepal Earthquake

April 28, 2015 by Yein Jee

The death toll following the earthquake in Nepal has risen to over 4300 and still rising. United Nations says that eight million people have been affected, and over a million need food aid. I’m not a religious person, pray if you wish (no sarcasm meant) but it’s more practical to send donation via relevant bodies.

March 11, 2011 by Yein Jee

A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Japan this afternoon and triggered a tsunami up to 10 metres high. Video shows the three-metres wave hitting Sendai in the east coast.

The death toll stands at 26 at the time of writing, with many feared missing. [Update] Over 1300 fatalities, death toll continues to rise and may exceed 10000. You can make a donation to Red Cross Japan via Google’s Crisis Response project.

Final updates

The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, or the Great East Japan Earthquake, was a 9.0-magnitude undersea earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred at 14:46 JST on March 11.

It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan. It’s also the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world since modern record-keeping began in 1900.

The earthquake triggered destructive tsunami waves of up to 40 metres that struck Japan, in some cases travelling up to 10 km inland.

Over 13,000 deaths are confirmed, with another 15,000 reportedly missing.

The earthquake and tsunami also caused a nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daichi Nuclear Power Plant.
