San Andreas movie trailer

May 16, 2015 by Yein Jee

Official trailer for San Andreas, an upcoming American disaster movie. Directed by Brad Peyton, the film stars Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Art Parkinson, and Paul Giamatti. In theatres May 29 in the United States.

The San Andreas Fault [wiki] is a continental transform fault that extends roughly 1,200 kilometres through California. It’s a real thing, and scientists have long predicted that a huge (8.0+ magnitude) earthquake will occur in the next few decades somewhere along the fault.

The movie sets on a major earthquake caused by the San Andreas Fault that devastates Los Angeles and San Francisco. And the story focuses on a rescue helicopter pilot who tries to save his estranged wife and beautiful daughter while totally ignoring his civic duty during the crisis.

Update & verdict

I watched the movie many months later on TV. The plot is cheesy, and sometimes ridiculous, like in most other disaster films. The special effects are great though; some scenes are over the top, which again is a common thing in this genre; but it’s believable enough to see it as something probable in real life.

The tsunami scene reminded me so much of the Japanese disaster in 2011, it made me felt a bit guilty that I actually enjoyed the film. It’s easier said than done but I hope people are more ready for natural disasters these days. As the cliché goes, it’s not whether it will happen, it’s simply about when.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey trailer

October 4, 2012 by Yein Jee

Official trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It’s the first of a three film series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel The Hobbit. The other two are The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies, and together they act as a prequel to the epic Lord of The Rings (LOTR) film trilogy.

The cast of An Unexpected Journey includes Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt, Ken Stott, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood and Andy Serkis. Peter Jackson directed all the movies in the two trilogies; and a few actors also star in both series.

Rush Hour 3 movie trailer

June 12, 2007 by Yein Jee

Trailer for American action comedy film Rush Hour 3. Directed by Brett Ratner as usual, with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker reprising their roles as cop buddies. The duo has to travel to Paris this time to uncover secrets about a notorious triad and also to capture an assassin.

The multinational cast includes Max von Sydow, Hiroyuki Sanada, Yvan Attal, Noémie Lenoir and Youki Kudoh. In cinemas in Malaysia and the United States in August 2007.

The film series fall into the “stupid fun” category, which is good for a few laughs but offers zero enlightenment. The first movie in 1998 is actually decent, but the 2001 sequel is pretty average despite starring Zhang Ziyi as a villain. Hope this new instalment will at least be somewhere in between.

Review – Let’s end this for good

Can’t recall from its predecessors but I’m not fond of the amount of sexual jokes in the film. I get that it’s a common thing in Hollywood action comedies but it’s disgusting when they rely too much on that. There are many warning signs in the trailer but I didn’t notice that back then.

There are still some fun moments but it’s a poor movie overall. The two main leads have lost their sparks in tandem and most stuff seems to be getting old. The actions are poor too, one of the worst I’ve seen from a Jackie Chan’s movie. It’s probably wise to end the franchise right here.

On lesser notes, the trailer focuses on Paris (not untrue) but about 30 minutes of the show is set in Los Angeles instead. Chinese actress Zhang Jingchu actually has decent screen time despite not appearing much in the teaser video; she’s also not credited as a main cast which is kinda odd.
