Paris Hilton shares her favourite 2000’s fashion trends

June 10, 2017 by Yein Jee

American socialite turned businesswoman Paris Hilton shares her favourite fashion trends from early 2000’s in a video with W Magazine.

I almost forgot about her existence as she has been relatively quiet in recent years. Love her or hate her, the 36-year-old has been a trendsetter regardless. At her peak she’s as famous as any top list stars.

Socialite culture, celebrity lifestyle reality shows, over the top fashion, pets as accessories, selfies, phone obsession, BFF etc. She didn’t create these stuff but she popularised these for sure.

Although she finds success as a businesswoman in recent years, I won’t call her a role model. But when you look at youngsters these days you will find them doing many things which Hilton had “pioneered”.

Those kids probably don’t even know who’s Paris Hilton, but she leaves a legacy in global pop culture.

You may say that she’s good at riding the wave instead, that the trends will become so with or without her. It’s probably true, but she still saw those earlier than most others and made it to her advantage.

Paris Hilton on the cover of Runway Magazine

April 10, 2015 by Yein Jee

American fashion icon Paris Hilton is the cover girl for Spring 2015 issue of Runway Magazine [US].

She also made headlines in Malaysia recently for her connection (or just party photos) with controversial financier Jho Lo. The later is the centre of a huge corruption scandal involving our Prime Minister.

The party stories first emerged in 2010 but resurfaced due to the scandal. Not going to bore readers with details, you can read more about Jho Lo and his Hollywood connection on Nytimes instead.

Back to Hilton, looks like she’s making a comeback to the showbiz after busy expanding her fashion and fragrance empire around the world. She’s reportedly making millions of dollars a year from that.

Used to like her for the lulz but I’ve always thought that she’s a smart one. She obviously shows her business wit over the years, and she still looks fine in this cover photo.

Paris Hilton sent home from Japan

September 22, 2010 by Yein Jee

Paris Hilton denied Japan entryJapanese immigration has denied entrance for American socialite Paris Hilton due to her drug offence records in the United States.

Japan has strict laws with drugs, travellers have to be mindful about that. They usually block entries for people who had recent record (for up to a few years), including offences in foreign countries.

Hilton has just pleaded guilty of drug possession and obstruction in Las Vegas a couple of days ago. Hence it’s an easy decision for the Japanese authority to send her home.

Her original schedule was an Asia tour to promote her fashion and fragrance line. That included an event in Kuala Lumpur which is just 15 minutes of drive from my home.

Not that I planned to go but she has cancelled everything instead of re-routing to continue her activities. Perhaps her team is concerned or unsure about drug laws in other countries after this experience.

Paris Hilton for American President

August 7, 2008 by Yein Jee

Paris Hilton has released a video for her “presidential campaign” in respond to US presidential candidate John “The White Hair Dude” McCain’s earlier promotional video.

McCain’s video is supposedly about oil and gas. But it also likens his election rival Barack Obama to Hilton and Britney Spears, hinting that Obama is just a celebrity who can’t lead.

Not sure who came out with the idea but it’s stupid to suggest that celebrities are not good leaders. In fact it’s bad to stereotype any group of people as incompetent leaders, it’s close to discrimination.

Despite her TV persona I’ve always felt that Paris Hilton is actually pretty smart. She made use of whatever opportunities that came to her – good, bad, or weird – and created a brand of her own.

This responding video for example is in many ways better than McCain’s one. Not just the humorous jabs but the solution to the oil and gas debate makes sense too.

Hilton may not be the one who thought of that or produced the video. But the ability to surround yourself with capable people is a huge talent. And it’s also a valuable trait of a great leader.
