McDonald’s #1 Store in Des Plaines, Illinois

August 28, 2007 by Yein Jee

Thought to be the first McDonald’s restaurant when I posted the original article… but it’s actually a museum in Des Plaines modelled after the first branch opened by McDonald’s Corporation founder Ray Kroc in 1955. Image by Sgtfun.

McDonalds museum in Des Plaines

The first McDonald’s restaurant was actually opened by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino, California, in 1948.

The Des Plaines outlet was the ninth but the first in collaboration with Ray Kroc, thus it’s often regarded to be the beginning of the modern McDonald’s franchise that exist today. More McDonald’s history on wiki.

Takeru Kobayashi defeated at Nathan’s eating contest

July 6, 2007 by Yein Jee

Japanese legendary competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi is finally beaten at the Nathan’s Famous July Fourth International Hot Dog Eating Contest. His hope of seventh successive title was ended by American rival Joey Chestnut.

Kobayashi took part in the competition despite injuring his jaw last week; the injury didn’t seem to affect his performance though, as he swallowed 63 hot dogs in 12 minutes, his personal best in the competition.

That however wasn’t enough to stop Chestnut, who gulped 66 hot dogs to claim the 2007 title with a new world record.

Yi Jianlian the 6th pick in NBA draft

June 29, 2007 by Yein Jee

Chinese basketball star Yi Jianlian in NBAChinese basketball star Yi Jianlian was selected with the 6th pick in the 2007 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 19-year-old power forward will become the 4th Chinese player in NBA after Wang Zhizhi, Menk Bateer and Houston Rockets star centre Yao Ming.

Yi is 6ft 11in. He previously played for Guangdong Southern Tigers in the Chinese Basketball Association and has played with the Chinese national team in the 2004 Olympic Games and 2006 World Championships.

Yi is surprised with Milwaukee’s decision to pick him, as he has previously expressed his desire to play in a city with heavy Asian influence. Milwaukee, with an estimated 27,500 Asian-American population, certainly doesn’t fit the bill.

The Chinese international however remains positive with his NBA future. “It’s a surprise to me… I’m not really familiar with the city as well, but I’m happy to be playing with the team and happy to play in the NBA.”
