Japanese competitive eating ace Takeru Kobayashi was arrested and spent a night in jail for wanting to eat a hot dog disrupting a hot dog eating contest.
The AP video pretty much sums up everything (epic at 0:51 LOL). The contest organiser wants some exclusivity which the Japanese couldn’t agree on. He then got high with all the fans’ chants and let his ego took over at the event.
Takeru Kobayashi is a legend in this sport; it’s probably fair to say that without him, competitive eating wouldn’t be as popular these days. And this event – the Nathan’s Famous July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest – wouldn’t be as successful in particular. It’s arguable though, that the competition has did the same thing for the Japanese champ; giving him the fame and fortune that he enjoys.
Regardless, it’s not a class act to spoil others’ party like that. It’s a corporate sponsored event; and as much as I want to side on Kobi, it’s the organiser’s rights to set up the rules whichever way they pleased.
Takeru Kobayashi was charged with “obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest, trespassing and disorderly conduct.” Thankfully the judge who might be a fan has enough sense to free the dude after his not-guilty plead.
