Chestnut retained Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest title
American Joey Chestnut retained his Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest title in 2008, beating Japanese arch rival Takeru Kobayashi after a close fight. Each of them consumed 59 hot dogs in 10 minutes and forced the game into extra time, with Chestnut claiming the final victory after a five-dog playoff.
Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is arguably the world’s most famous competitive eating contest. The competition is held annually on America’s Independence Day (July 4) in Coney Island, New York, since 1970s.
Takeru Kobayashi is a legend in the contest, winning it for six times in a role (2001-2006) before Joey Chestnut, nicknamed the “Jaws”, claimed the title in 2007 and successfully defending it this year.
Takeru Kobayashi defeated at Nathan’s eating contest
Japanese legendary competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi is finally beaten at the Nathan’s Famous July Fourth International Hot Dog Eating Contest. His hope of seventh successive title was ended by American rival Joey Chestnut.
Kobayashi took part in the competition despite injuring his jaw last week; the injury didn’t seem to affect his performance though, as he swallowed 63 hot dogs in 12 minutes, his personal best in the competition.
That however wasn’t enough to stop Chestnut, who gulped 66 hot dogs to claim the 2007 title with a new world record.
