Judge! (2014) movie trailer

Movie trailer for 2014 Japanese comedy Judge!, starring Satoshi Tsumabuki, Keiko Kitagawa, Lily Franky, Kyoka Suzuki and Etsushi Toyokawa.

Tsumabuki plays a rookie in an advertising agency who’s being planted as a judge in a prestigious competition by his boss in order to gain an edge.

Beside juggling between his conscience as a judge and his job “duty” for his firm, the rookie also has to act like husband with a fake wife who accompanied him to the judging event (in a close venue) to make sure that he does his work properly.

Akunin (2010) movie trailer

Akunin (means devilish person) is a 2010 Japanese film directed by Lee Sang-il, based on Shuichi Yoshida’s crime noir novel of the same name. It bagged all four acting awards at the 34th Japan Academy Prize presented earlier this year.

The excellent cast include Satoshi Tsumabuki, Eri Fukatsu, Akira Emoto, Masaki Okada, Kirin Kiki and Hikari Mitsushima; and they were aided by the acclaimed music composer Joe Hisaishi who made the film score. The movie will show in UK cinemas (titled as Villain in English) on August 19 by Third Window Films.

Akunin tells the story of a loner who killed her ex-girlfriend (victim), a gold-digger who treated him like thrash and dumped him for a rich kid who in turn treated her badly and threw her out the car before she was murdered. The rich boy was treated as suspect before evidence eventually pointed out the real situation.

In a twist of event, the loner met another lonely woman a day after the crime and love blossomed in between. But when the loner confessed to his new lover about his act and his intention to surrender (his face was all over the news by that time), the woman persuaded him not to and run into hiding together instead.

Beside the obvious parts questioning who’s the real villain, the film also cleverly instilled modern social issues – i.e. loneliness, financial status, family disintegration etc. – in the plots, which makes people wondered why the “villains” became who they are. The film didn’t draw much conclusion on these, and there’s plenty of rooms for interpretations, which is probably another successful side of the movie.
